Meaning and history
Nginx was developed by Igor Sysoev in 2002 to address the C10k problem, aiming to handle 10,000 concurrent connections. By 2008, it was serving 500 million requests per day for the Rambler search engine.
In July 2011, Sysoev and Maxim Konovalov founded Nginx, Inc. to offer commercial support and products. The company raised $3 million in October 2011 and $10 million in October 2013. In March 2019, F5 acquired Nginx, Inc. for $670 million.
Nginx continues to be a leading web server, with its open-source software powering a significant portion of the internet.
2004 – Today
The name of the software, Nginx, is derived from “Engine X”. Its text-based visual identity is futuristic and stylish, it looks sharp and masculine.
The Nginx logo is composed of a wordmark and an emblem, which is usually used on its own, but sometimes is placed near the lettering.
The Nginx inscription in all the capital letters is executed in a custom rounded sans-serif typeface with the second “N” of the nameplate mirrored, and the smooth “I” horizontally cut into two almost equal parts.
The letter “G” of the wordmark has six angles, and the software’s emblem repeats the silhouette of the G-hexagon.
The Nginx emblem is a bold green hexagon with a white capital “N” on it, written in the same typeface as the whole wordmark.
The green and white color palette of the Nginx logo is a representation of growth and progress. It is a fresh and optimistic color combination, which shows the innovative approach and young spirit of the company.
