Three Asian countries – Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines – will host the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. While we have three years before it, the world’s basketball association has already unveiled a logo for the event.
The central element of the upcoming championship’s emblem is the Naismith Trophy, a traditional award of the FIBA Basketball World Cup. The trophy is depicted inside a sideways heart in whose curves we can make out the number 23 which refers to the year of the event. According to FIBA’s press-release, the heart was chosen to be a symbol of the passion for the game, and its colorful strokes emphasize this idea, giving it a cheerful feel.
The logo was presented in a video featuring similar design motifs in coloring and lettering as well as the slogan for the 2023 FIBA World Cup “Don’t Miss A Beat”. The visual design was built on the curves unifying the heart, 23 and 3 – as a reference to the host countries – that was shown as a burst of colors.
In addition, FIBA pointed to the high popularity of basketball in the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan as well as their collaboration in the preparation for the world championship that is also reflected in the logo.
The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup is planned to take place in Okinawa, Jakarta and Manila from August 10th to September 10th 2023.
