Meaning and history

Blue1 Logo history

Blue1 is an airline that was founded by Swedish airline SAS in 1987. Over the years, Blue1 has achieved significant milestones in the aviation industry. It initially operated as a regional airline, offering domestic and international flights within Europe. In 1998, Blue1 became a subsidiary of the SAS Group, which further strengthened its position in the market.

One of Blue1’s notable accomplishments was its expansion of routes and destinations. It successfully increased its flight network to cover major cities across Europe, catering to both business and leisure travelers. The airline focused on providing excellent customer service and maintaining high safety standards throughout its operations.

However, in recent years, Blue1 has undergone some changes in its business strategy. In 2015, SAS announced that Blue1 would no longer operate its own flights and would transition into a capacity provider for other airlines within the SAS Group. This decision led to a reduction in Blue1’s fleet size and a shift in its operational focus.

Currently, Blue1 continues to play a vital role within the SAS Group by providing aircraft and crew for the group’s operations. While it no longer operates under its own brand, Blue1 contributes to the overall success and efficiency of the SAS Group’s flight operations.

What is Blue1?
Blue1 was a Finnish airline that operated from 1987 to 2016. It was a subsidiary of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and primarily focused on domestic and European flights. Blue1 had a fleet of Boeing aircraft and provided a range of services to its passengers before ceasing operations in 2016.

1988 – 1998

The first name of the Blue 1 air carrier was Air Botnia, so its original logo, designed in 1988, featured this wordmark written in bright blue bold characters of an italicized font with interesting sharpened tails of the lines. The lettering was placed under a blue and red “AB” abbreviation, drawn in solid lines with elongated strokes of the “A”, and the “B” made of two equal parts, placed at a small distance from each other.

1998 – 2004

The redesign of 1998 introduced a pretty restrained and modest logo, with the simple emblem placed on the left from the title case sans-serif lettering in black. The emblem was a solid copper-brown square with the name of the company written along its bottom part in white characters of the same font as the main wordmark.

2004 – 2016

Blue1 Logo

In 2004 the company was renamed Blue1 and the logo was changed right after. The new concept is stronger and more confident than the previous badges: a bold blue title case “Blue” was written across a solid blue rectangular banner and accompanied by a massive gray “1” formed of several solid gray squares of the same sizes. This was the first and the last badge of the rebranded company.
