Meaning and history

Thai Airways International is the largest airline in Thailand, and a member of the most reputable air alliance in the world, Star Alliance. The company was founded at the beginning of the 1960s, and since 2006, its homeport is Suvarnabhumi Airport located in Bangkok, which is considered to be one of the most modern airports across the globe.

Thai Airlines aims to make their customers’ flights as comfortable as possible, so the company prioritizes safety, high-quality service, and comfort, at every step of the process. That brought the air carrier to get the title of the best airline in Southeast Asia twice, in 2011 and 2012.

What is Thai Airways International?

Thai Airways International is the leading air carrier of Thailand, which was founded in 1960. The homeport of the airways is Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok, opened in 2006, and considered to be one of the most important hubs in Asia. Thai Airways is one of the Five Star Alliance founding members.

As for the visual identity, the leading air carrier of Thailand has been pretty constant since the 1970s. Its current emblem is a refined and modernized version of the logo, created in 1975, although before that the badge of Thai Airways was completely different.

1960 – 1975

The original logo for Thai Airlines International, designed in 1979, featured a traditional Thailand symbol — a dancer, enclosed into a circular frame. The design, nicknamed “The Dancing Man”, featured a solid gold figure on a white background, in a thin blue framing, with a bold italicized “Thai” written in capitals of a sharp sans-serif typeface, across the dancer’s body. This badge stayed with the air carrier for more than a decade.

1975 – 2005

The emblem developed by Walter Landor Associates featured a purple, magenta, and gold “jumpee,” which was based on the country’s traditional imagery, including its gold temples, tropical orchids, and luxurious silk.

In 2005, the emblem was updated, keeping the idea of the previous badge, but making it more modern and clean. The colors were slightly modified as was the typeface, which became lighter and better legible. The purple became dark and deep, adding professionalism and confidence to the look. As for the wordmark, it is now set in the uppercase and uses a sophisticated font with slightly elongated and sharpened ends of the bars.
