S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a shooter video game, which was released in 2007. Based on the novel by brothers Strugatsky, the game takes its players to Chernobyl and makes them fight for life. Developed for the Microsoft Windows platform, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has two volumes released by today.
Meaning and history
S.T.A.L.K.E.R., a computer game of the FPS genre with RPG elements, was created by the Ukrainian studio GSC Game World, which was founded by Grigorovich Sergey Konstantinovich Grigorovich at the age of 16. Actually, it was his initials that served as the name for the company.
GSC was founded in 1995, and two years later the studio released its first product, a game called WarCraft 2000, a free remake of the cult WarCraft 2. However, the first pancake was a failure and the game didn’t earn much popularity. But GSC’s second project became a great success for the company, it was a real-time strategy game Cossacks: European Wars, released in 2001.
In 2002, the studio started developing S.T.A.L.K.E.R, a game for which the developers were inspired by Andrei Tarkovsky’s movie with the same title and the Strugatsky brothers’ story “Picnic on the Side of the Road”. From this symbiosis was born S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, released only in March 2007.
The action of the first game in the series takes place in the spring of 2012, but everything is based on the events that took place on April 26, 1986, namely – the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. As a result of the explosion of the reactor of the fourth power unit, a huge amount of radioactive substances fell into the air. The catastrophe led to the creation in 1987 of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone – a territory with a radius of 30 kilometers around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which is closed to outsiders and civilians. It is in this exclusion zone that the player will have to start his mission.
2007 – 2024
The visual identity of the famous shooters which name deciphers as “Scavengers. Trespasses. Adventurers. Loners. Killers. Explorers. Robbers.”, is strong and mas-culine. Its logo in monochrome evokes a sense of danger and makes the main pur-pose of the game very visible.
Though the logo is composed of a single wordmark, executed in white with black accents, and placed on a black bag round, it looks very vivid and full of energy due to the stylized and blurred lines of the inscription.
The matrix-like wordmark in narrowed bold sans-serif typeface has its lines elongated yet strict and solid. Each letter has a dripping texture and uneven lines, but despite it, the lettering looks distinct and readable.
The black and white color palette of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. visual identity is the perfect choice for representing the powerful manly character of the game and its shooting line. This color combination also allows placing the logo on various backgrounds of posters and covers, without losing individuality and recognizability. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. logo is minimalist and timeless, able to elevate the whole perception of the game and to show its purpose.
2024 – Today
The redesign of 2024 has kept the recognizable style of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. logo untouched but worked on making the black-and-white composition stronger and more stable. This was achieved by refining the contours of the uppercase characters and removing the blurred strokes from the upper part of the inscription, keeping them just at the bottom. These stamps made the capitals look more brutal and readable too, creating a more distinctive and modern image, which represents the legendary game at its best.
