SMU was founded in 1911 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. It is named after Bishop John Wesley Southern. Its first class, comprising just 362 undergraduates, though, was admitted in 1915. Besides providing education, the university desired to assist individuals in their spiritual growth and community service. In the early years, SMU faced numerous challenges, including financial struggles and competition from other local institutions. During the 20th century, the university established new programs and research centers. Today, SMU is a thriving institution.

The institution’s shortened name is presented in clear and bold font with bracketed slab serifs. It is accompanied by a round red emblem with a dome building drawn in white. This is a historic building on the campus known as Dallas Hall. Making it part of the logo shows that the university has a rich history and tries to stay true to its original values. The round base is likely a symbol of unity and wholeness.
