The Nintendo Switch is one of the most popular video game consoles created in the history of the industry. The Switch was developed and released by the now world-famous Nintendo, which was founded back in 1889 in the city of Kyoto, and entered the video game market in the 1980s. The company has created several iconic consoles and games in its history. The Nintendo Switch console was officially launched in 2017.
Meaning and history
In its long history, Nintendo has released quite a few consoles that have gained incredible popularity in the world.
In 1983, the Famicom was released, and in 1989, Nintendo released its first handheld console, the Game Boy. Since then, the Japanese company has revolutionized the video game market. But the real breakthrough came in the mid-2010s when Nintendo began developing a new console. Developers wanted to introduce something special and give gamers a new gaming experience, which resulted in the Nintendo Switch. The appearance of the Nintendo Switch in March 2017 was a landmark event for fans of portable consoles. Since that time, the manufacturer has managed to release three versions of devices, endowing each with special characteristics.
Nintendo Switch is a unique gaming console that combines a home and portable system. Gamers loved Switch from the very beginning for its originality, versatility, and interesting design. In no time at all, Nintendo Switch has managed to become the fastest-selling console in history and has had many great exclusives.
Nintendo formally announced Switch back in March 2015, codenamed Nintendo NX. The Switch was officially announced on October 20, 2016. The Nintendo Switch was released on March 3, 2017. Nintendo sold 2.7 million Switch copies in its first month, and by the end of the year, more than 10 million. At the end of 2021, Switch became the fastest-selling console in history. Customers bought more than a hundred million copies in less than five years, breaking the PlayStation 4 record.
Since the first Nintendo Switch was released in 2017, the company has already released several versions of the legendary console and dozens of popular video games that have won the love of gamers around the world.
In terms of visual identity, Nintendo Switch is quite a constant brand, which has never redesigned the logo and just created one for each of the new versions of the console.
2016 (Pre-launch)
Initially, the Nintendo Switch console was supposed to be Nintendo NX, and this name was used for the brand’s prelaunch logo, which was introduced at the beginning of 2016. It was a super laconic badge with just the uppercase “NX” set in gray against a plain white background without any accompaniment. The characters were executed in a modern and stylish sans-serif typeface with softened angles and straight cuts of the bars.
2017 – Today
The first official logo was designed for Nintendo Switch in 2017 and is still used by the company. It is a bright red square with the white graphical element set on top and the two-leveled inscription, also in white, at the bottom. The graphical part of the badge depicts Joy-Con controllers, two small remotes with buttons, one fully colored white and the other only outlined. The minimalistic style of the images is supported by the laconic shapes of the uppercase sans-serif characters in the inscription.
2019 – Today
The release of the Lite version of the Switch console was followed by the creation of the new logo. This time the logo was set in a minimalistic gray and white color palette, with just the gray lettering written in one straight line against a transparent background. The only interesting thing about this badge is that the “Lite” part of the inscription is significantly larger than the “Nintendo Switch” one.
2021 – Today
Another version of the Switch console, OLED, was introduced by Nintendo in 2021, with a new logo designed for it. The badge for the new model uses almost the same style as the Lite one, but here the inscriptions are set in two levels, as the bars of the characters are bolder, hence the gray of the letters looks darker and stronger.
2025 – Today
A bold red design with a stylized controller outline and “2” next to it, paired with “NINTENDO SWITCH” below in uppercase, signaling a fresh gaming evolution as of 2025.
Font and color
The lettering from the logo of Nintendo Switch is set in a clean and stable geometric sans-serif typeface, which is a modified FF Mark. The characters feature full shapes and distinctive contours, perfectly representing the excellence and innovativeness of the consoles.
As for the color palette of the Nintendo Switch visual identity, the original version uses a classy combination of red and white, which is all about passion, while the newer models of the console have their logos set in gray, a color of professionalism and reliability.
