Meaning and history

Native Instruments Logo history

The history of Native Instruments, which today is one of the key players in the music equipment market, began in 1995 in a small office in Berlin. The company’s goal from the very beginning was to provide musicians, producers, sound engineers, and DJs working in a wide variety of genres and directions with first-class tools for creativity.

The company was founded by musician and engineer Stefan Schmitt, who realized earlier than many that ordinary personal computers could be used as powerful musical instruments. It was Schmitt who created the first audio platform for the computer. Together with programmer Volker Hins, he conceptualized the first modular synthesizer program, which was later named Generator.

In recent years, Native Instruments has been building audio hardware, offering high-end audio interfaces, groove boxes, DJ software platforms, and other controllers.

More than 1.5 million creators – from award-winning artists to aspiring producers – use Native Instruments hardware and software every month. The brand’s products have spawned new music genres, and eight out of ten songs in the Billboard Top 100 feature NI elements and sound solutions.

1996 – 2003

Native Instruments Logo 1996

The original Native Instruments logo, designed in 1996, featured a stylish yet laconic emblem in black, white, and blue, and a stable uppercase lettering, executed in a narrowed geometric sans-serif typeface, in black. The emblem depicted a geometric figure with the top and bottom sides arched to the center and the side one — from it. The rectangle was vertically divided into two halves — the white with the black “N” on it, and the blue with the white “I”.

2023 – Today

Native Instruments Logo

The Native Instruments logo became synonymous with a quality mark of music-oriented software. Its truly iconic visual identity is composed of a wordmark and an emblem on its left.

The Native Instruments nameplate in all the capitals is executed in a bold sans-serif typeface with straight neat lines. The inscription is perfectly balanced and looks confident and solid.

The Native Instruments emblem depicts a rectangle with its horizontal sides arched to the center and the vertical ones — to the sides. The figure is vertically divided into two equal parts — the left one is colored white, and the right one features a calm blue color.

The Native Instruments monogram is placed inside the emblem with its “N” drawn in black on a white background and “I” in white on a blue background. Both letters feature the same typeface as the wordmark.

The black, white and blue color palette of the Native Instruments visual identity looks light and fresh, reflecting a reputable brand with rich experience.

The Native Instruments logo is timeless and simple, yet it represents the professionalism and authority of the company, which is known to be one of the world’s most popular providers of the musical software.
