The Lamar Cardinals, hailing from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, trace their roots back to the inception of the university in 1923, originally established as South Park Junior College. Renamed in 1932 to honor Mirabeau B. The Lamar Cardinals represent Lamar University’s vibrant array of NCAA Division I sports teams. Known for their competitive edge in basketball, baseball, and football, they embody the university’s dedication to athletic excellence and academic integrity, marking a legacy that stretches beyond just sports achievements.
1997 – 2009
On the previous Lamar Cardinals logo (1997-2009), the cardinal bird appeared inside a black ring featuring the words “Lamar” (in yellow) and “University” (in white). The word “Cardinals” in a handwritten type could be seen above the bird.
2010 – Today
The 2010 Lamar Cardinals logo is less cluttered – there is only the bird’s head and the name of the university.
Lamar Cardinals basketball
The Cardinals have appeared in two NCAA Division I Tournaments, all as Lamar University. The Lady Cardinals have played in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament on four occasions and in the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournaments on two occasions.

The team has competed in 13 NCAA Division I tournaments and has 10 regular-season titles. Also, it has won one regular-season title in the Sun Belt Conference and five conference tournaments.
