Meaning and history
Humminbird was founded in 1971 by Tom Mann, a passionate angler and entrepreneur, in Eufaula, Alabama. The company quickly gained a reputation for its groundbreaking innovations in fish-finding technology. One of the early milestones for Humminbird was the introduction of the Super Sixty, the world’s first waterproof depth sounder, which revolutionized the fishing industry by providing accurate underwater information to anglers. This innovation set the stage for Humminbird’s continuous pursuit of excellence and innovation in marine electronics.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Humminbird continued to push the boundaries of technology with the development of advanced fish finders and depth sounders. The introduction of the LCR series, which featured a liquid crystal display, marked a significant leap forward in fish-finding technology. This series provided anglers with clearer and more detailed underwater images, making it easier to locate fish and navigate waters. In the early 2000s, Humminbird introduced the first consumer-grade side-imaging sonar system, which allowed users to see a detailed view of the underwater environment on both sides of their boat. This breakthrough technology provided a significant advantage to anglers, helping them locate fish and structure with unprecedented precision.

1971 – Today
The Humminbird brand was named after the fastest bird, humming-bird. But Tom Mann didn’t know how to spell it right, when filling the trademark registration form, that’s how the Humminbird name appeared. It stuck and became synonymous with fish-finders.
The Humminbird logo is a wordmark with a teal low bird emblem on its right. The wordmark is executed in bold and confident typeface, which is close to Gunship serif sans.
And being executed in black, the wordmark speaks for the brand’s quality and reliability, while the yellow bird emblem is adding a little playfulness and connection to the world of nature.
