Ghost is a Swedish heavy metal band founded in Linköping in 2006. They are known for their theatrical stage presence and minutely thought-through backstory, which is described as “lore.”
Meaning and History
Although the story of the band goes back to 2006, it was only four years later that their first album, Opus Eponymous , was released. In April 2013, the second album, Infestissumam, rolled out, followed by Meliora just two years later, in 2015, and Prequelle in 2018. The fifth studio album, Impera, became available on 11 March 2022.
The leader has performed under the moniker “Papa Emeritus,” while all the other members are referred to as “Nameless Ghouls.” It was not until 2017 that the identity of the leader was revealed – this happened when his musicians began suing him over royalties.
What is Ghost?
The Swedish heavy metal band Ghost is loved for their occult and black-metal theatrics. They describe themselves as a satanic clergy. Ghost received a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2016 and also won or have been nominated for several Swedish Grammis awards.
2008 – 2025
The main part of the band’s brand identity is the wordmark. It was inspired by Gothic imagery, the aesthetics of horror films, and ancient religious symbols. These all set the tone for the music Ghost performs. The most obvious symbol in the wordmark is probably the inverted cross forming the letter “t.”
One of the band’s fans observed that, if you flip the logo, you may read the number “15049.” The fan went on to find the respective part of the Bible and discovered a pretty interesting verse in Corinthians 15:49: “And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.”
Next to the wordmark, occult symbols are often placed, like inverted crosses or sigils, which represent mysticism and satanic imagery. More importantly, though, there is often a faceless ghostly figure with a pointed hood, which can be interpreted as part of the logo, too. The supernatural character is wearing flowing robes and has an ornate cross on its chest.
The author of the images is Sloan Hall, a graphic designer and also a fan. He drew inspiration from the Ku Klux Klan symbolism and depictions of medieval executioners. He presented his pictures to the band, and then they worked together to give the design a finished look.
2025 – Today
The Ghost logo presents a striking, metallic design set against a white background, radiating an eerie, otherworldly vibe perfect for the band’s dark, theatrical persona. The word “Ghost” is crafted in a jagged, gothic font with a 3D, chrome-like appearance, featuring sharp edges and a weathered, scratched surface that hints at a supernatural or ancient quality. The letters shimmer with silver and black tones, catching light in a way that suggests movement and mystery, while subtle cracks and shadows enhance the ominous, haunting atmosphere. This logo embodies the Swedish rock band Ghost’s unique blend of occult imagery and heavy metal aesthetics, captivating fans with its bold, enigmatic presence.
Font and Color
Due to its sinister air, the typeface becomes a perfect match to the band’s overall style and backstory. While the wordmark is hand-drawn, we can clearly see that it is based on a Gothic typeface, which supports the mystic theme.
Before making the final decision about the color, the band and Sloan Hall tried out several palettes. Yet, at the end of the day, what can beat the old good black and white? This color scheme has been the primary one ever since the debut album was introduced, although occasionally, the band would add some other colors.
