What are CSU Buccaneers?

CSU Buccaneers is the collegiate athletic program of Charleston Southern University, which consists of seven men’s and nine women’s teams, competing in various sports disciplines, including indoor and outdoor Track & Field, Cross Country, Basketball, Baseball, and a few others.

As for the visual identity, the logo of the athletic program from Charleston a southern University has changed dramatically since the introduction of its first version in the middle of the 1960s. There was just one redesign, held by the CSU Buccaneers teams, but it completely changed everything on the badge — from style and concept to the color palette.

1964 — 2003

The CSU Buccaneers logo, designed in 1964, stayed with the athletic program for almost forty years. It was a monochromatic contoured image of a pirate, depicted in his full height, and standing with his arms crossed on his chest. The outfit and weapons of the buccaneers were all carefully drawn with maximum details, but due to the use of only black color for the image, the logo looked strict and serious. There was no additional lettering or framing on this version of the CSU Buccaneers logo.

2004 — Today

The redesign of 2004 has introduced a completely new badge for the CSU Buccaneers athletic program. First of all, the color palette was switched from black-on-white to a deep shade of blue, also on a plain white background. Secondly, the image of a pirate was removed from the badge, and now the composition featured a combination of a massive outlined “CSU” abbreviation in a heavy angular sans-serif font, and a minimalistic graphical emblem, depicting two crossed swords, also drawn in the same shade of blue and placed under the “CSU” inscription. The letters in the abbreviation were placed arched from the center, with the middle “S” set a bit lower than the “C” and “U” on its sides.
