What are California Baptist Lancers?
California Baptist Lancers is the name of an athletic program from California Baptist University, the program is composed of 18 men’s and women’s teams, which compete in various sports disciplines, including Basketball, Baseball, Water Polo, and many others.
In terms of visual identity, California Baptist Lancers teams look very progressive and determined. The program has several logos, which are all drawn in one style and color palette, formed by two very elegant and noble colors — gold and blue, with white accents.
2003 – 2017
The logo, used by the California Baptist Lancers teams at the beginning of the 2000s, featured a stylized depiction of the program’s mascot, Lance the Lancer, which was first introduced in the middle of the 1950s. However, the mascot is drawn in such an abstract way, that one might only see a geometric shield with a horizontally located lighting bolt on top. It was executed in blue and gold, and placed on the left from the uppercase “Lancers” lettering in gold, with a thin white and blue outline.
2017 – Today
The redesign of 2017 has played with the contours of the California Baptist Lancers logo, slightly enlarging the graphical part, and intensifying the shades of the colors. The lettering was rewritten in solid blue with no outlines, making up a more distinctive and modern look of the whole badge. Sometimes the graphical part of the logo can be used with no additional lettering. There is also an alternate logo of the program, which is the geometric “CBU” abbreviation with sharp triangular cut-outs in the internal parts of the characters.
Font and color
The bold italicized lettering from the primary logo of the California Baptist Lancers teams is set in a custom typeface with sharp serifs on some of the letters. The designer font is quite close to such commercial types as Airbolt or EF Serpentinetrade Serif but with some significant modifications.
As for the color palette of the California Baptist Lancers’ visual identity, it is based on a combination of dark shades of blue gold, and white, which adds freshness and distinction to the composition.
