Meaning and History

Anthem Logo history

Anthem was founded in 1946 as Mutual Hospital Insurance Inc. The company grew significantly, controlling 80% of the health insurance market in the Indiana state by the 1970s. Since 1985, it has been known as Anthem Insurance Company. Almost twenty years later, it rebranded as Anthem. It went public in 2001. Over the years, Anthem expanded through mergers and acquisitions, becoming one of the largest health insurers in the country. In 2004, Anthem rebranded itself as WellPoint, Inc. following the merger with WellPoint Health Networks. The company reverted to the Anthem name ten years later. Its attempt to merge with another giant, Cigna, though, was blocked by regulatory authorities. The number of clients reached almost 40 million back in 2019.

2004 – 2014

Anthem Logo 2004

This logo was designed when the company changed its name to “WellPoint”, which is reflected in the logo. “WellPoint” is printed using a classic serif font that gives it a respected and well-established look. Although the first letters are slightly enlarged, all the letters are capitalized and have even, wide spacing between them. The inscription is done in blue, which is complimented by three wavy red lines above. The color palette combined with the decorative element clearly represents the patriotic values of the company.

2014 – Today

Anthem Logo

As the company returned to its earlier name, it had the logo updated again. This version has just the name printed in lighter shade of blue. The font choice is still traditional and features serifs. The bracketed slab serifs, though, were replaced by more modern, simple slab serifs featuring straight lines. It is also worth noting that the letters are lowercase, except for the first one. There are no decorative elements or anything in the background. The simplicity and clarity of the logo help it stand out.

Font and Color

Anthem Emblem

Since 2004, the logo features a bold, classic serif font with elegant, sharp serifs. It gives the inscription a traditional and formal appearance. The font resembles Engravers Oldstyle 205 Bold font or Cochin Pro Bold font. Another classic serif font with high contrast and elegant design has been used in the 2014 logo. This font can be replicated using New Bodoni DT Regular font or Archive Modern II font.

The logo used during the period the company was known as “WellPoint” has a blue and red color palette with white serving as the base. These are strong and patriotic colors that create a professional brand image. The new blue design conveys a sense of trust, responsibility, and care, reflecting the company’s focus on providing health insurance and related services.
