In 2005, America West Airlines merged with US Airways, forming the fifth-largest airline in the country. Today, the merged entity operates under the name American Airlines and is one of the largest airlines globally, serving numerous destinations worldwide.
What is America West Airlines?
America West Airlines was a major American airline that operated from 1983 to 2005. It was headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, and served as a low-cost carrier, offering domestic and international flights. In 2005, America West merged with US Airways to form the new entity known as US Airways, which eventually merged with American Airlines in 2013.
1983 – 1996
The first logo was designed for the America West Airlines brand at the beginning of the 1980s. It was quite a strict and simple composition with a gray and burgundy emblem placed on the left from the two-leveled lettering in a bold serif font. The burgundy lettering looked very elegant, while the minimalistic emblem was formed by modern geometric elements with straight lines — the burgundy circle and the gray capital “W”.
1996 – 2005
The redesign of 1996 has kept the composition of America West Airlines but redrawn it in a scarlet red color palette. As for the lettering part, it got rewritten in smooth green, in a stylized and bold sans-serif typeface with the diagonal cuts of the bars.
