Meaning and History

Zaxby’s Logo history

Founded in 1990 in a small college town in Georgia, Zaxby’s has turned into a chain with a crowd of fans and simply happy visitors. Two childhood friends, Tony Townley and Zach McLeroy, had the idea to open a restaurant spark at a basketball game. They opened the first location with $16 thousand. It is interesting that some of that money came from the sale of a drum kit since Zach was a drummer in a band. They wanted the name to be fun and played with the first name (Zach) and the word “snack” to come up with “Zaxby’s.” There were periods when Zaxby’s was among the fastest-growing fast-food chains in the country. The number of locations has almost reached 1,000 in 2024, which can be found in over 15 states.

What is Zaxby’s?
Zaxby’s is a fast-food restaurant that focuses on chicken wings and tenders and has become a cultural staple in the South. To give its menu a unique and memorable sound, many of the dishes are misspelled to include a “Z” (e.g. Fingerz and Zalads). Despite being a fast-food restaurant, Zaxby’s is proud to have most of the menu items taste on par or better than at sit-down restaurants.

1990 – 1994

The logo consists of a shortened name, ZAX, printed using a bold, geometric style. The use of contrasting stroke thickness reflects the variety offered at Zaxby’s and the fact that one can go from a mild sauce to an extremely hot and spicy insane sauce version. The logo turned out simple and memorable.

1994 – 1998

The updated logo features the full name printed using a bold, serif font and all caps. The inscription is straight across the top and arched bottom, which became its signature touch and gave the inscription depth. Above the name, there is a stylized, cartoonish chicken character with a nature background placed in an oval shape on the back. At the very bottom, there is a line that specifies the signature items on the menu – Chicken Fingers & Buffalo Wings. This part is done using the same font as for the name. The characters are smaller to get the same length for both lines. This logo marked the new era when Zaxby’s began to have a recognizable brand identity.

1998 – 2015

A colored version of the previous logo with some modifications was introduced in 1998. The chicken has a red head and white body with a yellow beak and feet. In the background, there are blue lines for contrast. This oval emblem with the chicken has not changed otherwise. The name also got color (blue with a thin black outline) and was placed above the oval emblem. Its arched bottom seems to curve around it and frame it. Instead of a long line about chicken wings and fingers, the logo has “Real Chicken” printed using a fine serif font in a playful manner. The colored version not only showed that the company was changing with the trends but also made the logo look more inviting and attractive.

2015 – 2017

The logo now consists of the name printed using the same bold font with pronounced serifs, adding to its recognized look. Instead of having any text that would be emphasizing the restaurant’s focus on chicken dishes, the designer placed a silhouette of a now recognizable chicken on a deep red circle. The silhouette is done in a contrasting white. The name also features a deeper shade of blue and no black outline. Such minimalistic, yet strong color palette and overall design have made the logo look contemporary and reflected the many years the brand has been on the market.

2017 – 2024

The updated design looks almost identical to the one in the earlier version. The letters, though, got notably bolder and slightly modified.

2024 – Today

Zaxby’s Logo

The logo features the bold, stylized text “ZAXBY’S” in dark blue, uppercase letters with a slightly slanted, dynamic font that conveys energy and modernity. The letters are thick and have a playful, rounded quality, giving the brand a friendly and approachable vibe. Below the text, a striking red circle serves as the backdrop for a white silhouette of a rooster, depicted in a confident, upright stance with its head turned to the side.

The color scheme of the logo – dark blue, red, and white—creates a patriotic and memorable impression, evoking a sense of American diner culture while maintaining a sharp, professional appearance. The red circle with the white rooster stands out vividly against the white background, drawing the eye and reinforcing the brand’s identity as a lively, flavorful fast-food chain.

Font and Color

Zaxby’s Emblem

Columba Ruby Semibold Pro font or NCT Larkspur SC Bold font with some modifications have been used in most of Zaxby’s logos. It is a classic serif font with semi-bold strokes and pronounced serifs. The characters are well-defined with a moderate contrast between thick and thin lines, giving it a traditional yet robust appearance.

Until 1998, the color palette consisted of black and white. Since then, the company switched to blue, white, and red in different combinations. These colors are vibrant and eye-catching. They create an inviting, casual dining atmosphere. At the same time, the blue and deep red create a solid and trustworthy brand image.
