Meaning and history
Western Michigan Broncos is the name of a collegiate athletic program from Western Michigan University, located in Kalamazoo. The program is composed of 16 men’s and women’s teams, which compete in the first division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in such sports disciplines as Cross Country, Gymnastics, Soccer, Football, Baseball, and several others.
The teams of the program compete in the NCAA asmembers of the MAC conference, while the men’s ice hockey club represents the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
1945 – 1967
The Western Michigan Broncos logo, designed in 1945, has stayed with the program for more than twenty years. It was a badge with an image of an elegant and graceful bronco horse drawn on it in light beige, with a brown outline. The horse was placed against a plain transparent background without any framing or lettering.
1967 – 1980
The very first logo of the Western Michigan Broncos was introduced in 1967 and stayed with the teams for almost a decade. The logo was composed of a brown and black image of the bronco horse placed above the geometric and bold brown “WMU” inscription in a thick black outline. It was a simple yet memorable and recognizable badge, which looked great on the jersey of the team.
1980 – 1988
The Western Michigan Broncos logo redesign, held in 1980, has refined the contours of the horse in the program’s badge and placed an animal above a heavy enlarged “WMU” lettering executed in an extended geometric serif font with the characters drawn in smooth dark gold color with a thin brown outline.
1994 – 1998
On the 1994 logo, there was a prancing horse in front of a large yellow “W.”
1998 – 2016
The logo used in 1998-2015 featured a totally similar horse paired with the name of the team placed below.
2016 – 2021
The redesign of 2016 has strengthened and modernized the Western Michigan Broncos logo, created in 1998. The head of a horse was now placed on a heavy capital letter “W”, drawn in chocolate-brown with a voluminous frame, composed of light-brown, black and gray. The badge looked very powerful and even aggressive, showing the teams of the program as very determined and strong competitors.
