Meaning and history
The history of the university starts with Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act signed in 1862. That act allowed the government to form the new educational organizations which would be able to grant land to their students. One of the first institutions, established under the Morrill Act, was Arkansas Industrial College. In 1875, the organization has built its first and one of the most important constructions throughout the history – Old Main, a large building with towers at the perimeter. At that time, the college became a university. Old Main has been the symbol of the university for more than 150 years, and it is shown in the seal, introduced in 1923.

???? – 2008
The logo, used by the University of Arkansas until 2008 featured a bright red two-leveled inscription enclosed between bold black horizontal lines and accompanied by a black-and-white graphical element, depicting the entrance to the Old Main, drawn with a horizontally-striped pattern. The bottom line of the lettering was composed of two styles: a cursive underlined “Of” in the lowercase, followed by a classy uppercase “Arkansas” in the uppercase of a bold serif font.
2008 – today
The primary logotype of the University of Arkansas shows us a two-line plate with its name. The upper part of the name, ‘University of’, is featured a bit smaller than the lower ‘Arkansas’. To the left side from the name, we can see a shield. On it, they have displayed one of the entrances in Old Main and a line with the year of foundation.
Seal
The seal features the east entrance of the Old Main. It stands as the central element of the whole mark. The building image is drawn on a shield, which points on a twisted paper-styled line, on which the year of foundation was shown. Around the shield, the brand designers have drawn many leaves, serving as an ornament. All of these details are put inside the ring, representing the name of the university and the ‘Veritate Duce Progredi’ motto. In English, this motto sounds like ‘To Advance with Truth as our Leader’.
Font
In the seal and the logotype, the brand designers of the university have decided to use two different scripts for inscriptions. The seal variation of the nameplate, the motto, and the year of foundation use a fat typeface with quite large serifs and small gaps between capitalized letters. The same font has been used in the year of foundation, written on the line in primary logotype. The nameplate in this logo, however, uses an extra light serif font.
Color
As well as the fonts, the color schemes of the two marks differ. The seal is black and white. The main logotype consists of a dark red shield with black and white Old Main, and the white line. The inscriptions in this logo are black.
