Thunderbolt is a revolutionary data exchange protocol that has enabled PC and laptop users to use the same connector for data and video streaming, as well as powering connected devices. Thunderbolt has significant advantages over USB, such as faster data transfer rates and universal connectivity. However, it is unlikely that Thunderbolt will completely replace USB anytime soon. Nonetheless, Thunderbolt technology is widely adopted across the industry, with many PC manufacturers incorporating the technology into their systems. As the demand for high-speed data transfer and versatile connectivity continues to grow, Thunderbolt’s market share will only grow.
Meaning and history
Thunderbolt is a data transfer technology that was developed in collaboration between Intel and Apple in 2011. Initially, Thunderbolt interfaces were supplied mainly with MacBook devices and other Apple gadgets. Later, the rights to Thunderbolt were completely transferred to Intel Corporation. In 2013, Intel released the second generation. The next major milestone came in 2015, when Intel unveiled Thunderbolt 3, also known as “Alpine Ridge.” In the fall of 2023, Intel and Apple introduced the fifth version of this protocol, which introduced the Bandwidth Boost mode, improved the ability to connect several 4K/6K/8K monitors, and increased “charging” power.
What is Thunderbolt?
Thunderbolt is the name of a hardware interface developed by Apple and Intel for connecting external devices to a computer. Thunderbolt allows you to transfer data to your device at maximum speed, and also acts as a protocol for charging portable devices and supports the connection of up to 6 devices simultaneously.
2011 – 2023
Besides the name, the logo features a stylized lightning bolt, cleverly crafted to convey the speed, power, and innovation that Thunderbolt technology embodies. The bolt itself is done in white, evoking a sense of perfection and cutting-edge technology. The surrounding circle, which is done in a deep blue gradient, adds a layer of professionalism and stability, underscoring the reliability and compatibility of the technology.
2023 – Today
The updated logo has a sleek and modern design thanks to clean lines and minimalistic aesthetic. It does a great job representing a groundbreaking technology in a simple, yet powerful way. The company kept the distinctive thunderbolt but gave it a square base instead of round one. The name was no longer done in all caps and, instead, featured a sentence case that gave it a lighter feel.
Font and Color
The original logo features a bold and sans-serif font that resembles Neo Sans Pro Medium font. The updated font uses a finer, sans-serif font that can be replicated using Maax font for Mac in TrueType and TT Hoves Medium font. In both cases, the inscriptions look professional and minimalistic.
The company kept the color palette the same throughout the years. It is a light blue color that is closely associated with dependalbility and trustworthiness. It perfectly aligns with the Thunderbolt’s focus on cutting-edge technology and innovative solutions.
