The legendary Run DMC trio managed to destroy all the stereotypes and rules that existed in popular music of the 80s with their work and brought hip-hop to the masses, building bridges between it and rock music. These black guys created their own unique style, which is responsible for the flourishing of modern hip-hop culture. Unlike the rappers who emerged in the ’70s, Run-D.M.C. kept things real with the laid-back streetwear that would serve as the foundation for all hip-hop fashion in the years to come. Having sold 230 million records worldwide and recorded a total of six albums – the debut of which was the self-titled Run-D.M.C. – they are known to many as the kings of hip-hop.
Meaning and History
Run, D.M.C., and Jam Master Jay grew up in the black, middle-class neighborhood of Hollis, Queens. It was there that they formed their group in 1981. Run was a DJ and beatboxer and joined his childhood friend D.M.C. to start creating rhymes. When they entered college, the duo hired successful local DJ Jam Master Jay (“Jazzy Jase”) to work the decks. Run’s brother, Russell Simmons, became their manager, and Run-D.M.C. was born. Run-D.M.C. pioneered their genre and achieved many significant milestones in music. Run-D.M.C announced their disbandment in 2002 following the murder of Jason Mizell. But they have since reunited, performing their first show at the 2012 Made in America festival. Jam Master Jay’s two sons took his place behind the decks on stage. In 2009, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

This logo is very straightforward and at the same bold and memorable. The group’s name, Run DMC, is split between two lines. This created a perfectly square logo with red lines at the bottom and top completing the picture. The choice of bold, block letters presented in a distinctive, all-caps style along with a contrasting and strong color palette created simple and impactful aesthetics. The logo became a lasting representation of their legacy in the music industry.
Font and Color
The black color is frequently associated with themes of identity, pride, and social justice in hip-hop. Meanwhile, the red represented rebellion and their anger with established rules and norms. The white allowed for freedom of expression and creativity, as well as enhanced the powerful properties of the other two colors.
A bold, sans-serif font with a strong and modern appearance has been chosen for the logo. The font is a well-known Arial Black font.
