OpenAI is a research organization dedicated to the development of artificial intelligence. The most famous and significant tool developed by the company is ChatGPT, a state-of-the-art natural language processing model capable of generating human-like text in real-time.
Meaning and history
OpenAI was founded in 2015 by Elon Musk and Sam Altman, former president of Y Combinator, together with prominent Silicon Valley scientists. Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn, was also among the project’s first investors. Musk stepped down from the board three years after founding the company but continued to invest in the project and advise the team.
OpenAI’s mission is to create a powerful and humane AI that will work for the benefit of all mankind, rather than individuals and corporations. For this purpose, the company was initially registered as a non-profit organization – the foundation was supposed to create safe AI with donors’ money, tell about its work, and keep the source code open for study.
At the time of its foundation, the OpenAI team set an innovative task – to create open-source neural networks. Gradually, the company proved that this is not only possible but also in demand. Thus, in 2016, OpenAI released two products. The first is Gym, a platform for training artificial intelligence. It trained neural networks on algorithmic tasks.
Then Universe came out – a trainer of intermediary programs between services or services and users. The product performed routine actions instead of a human. In 2018, OpenAI presented the GPT algorithm, and two years later, GPT-2 was created. The neural network was trained not only on book texts but also on Internet content.
The next version, GPT-3, was introduced in 2020. And Multimodal Language Model GPT-4 was released in March 2023. According to the developer, the neural network processes instructions more complex than previous versions of the product.
Well, The most famous OpenAI product is ChatGPT. Chatbot with artificial intelligence was released in November 2022. It can create any text on demand, generate ideas, and maintain a conversation.
What is OpenAI?
OpenAI is the name of a company engaged in research and implementation of artificial intelligence. The company was founded in December 2015 as a non-profit organization. The purpose of its creation was to release open-source software so that researchers would be able to develop artificial intelligence systems in the future, as well as to promote and develop friendly AI for the benefit of all mankind.
In terms of visual identity, OpenAI is very progressive, with a laconic typeface and an interesting geometry of the emblem. There are different versions, of what the emblem of the company stands for, but only one of them is right.
The new artificial intelligence model GPT-4 was released as early as 2023. The most notable change to this universal machine learning system is that it is multimodal, meaning it can understand more than one “modal” type of information and has a longer memory. But progress doesn’t stand still, and a year from now, in July 2024, OpenAI is introducing the next version of Chat GPT, 4.5, an even more advanced artificial intelligence engine.
2015 – 2017
The original OpenAI logo, created in 2015, was simple in its composition, but very stylish due to the use of a progressive designer font and an elegant light gray color palette. The badge was composed solely of the lettering, which was written in a geometric sans-serif against a transparent background with no graphical additions. The arched contours of the characters made the font look somewhat in between Mechanoid and Burpee commercial types. This version of the badge has stayed with the company for the first two years of its history.
2017 – Today
The OpenAI logo features a very interesting graphical element, which for many looks like a stylized flower, or just a letter “O”. But in reality, it is a type of knot, used by the marines and called The Monkey Fist. And this choice can be explained by the initial idea and mission of the company, the humane AI. Hence, OpenAI chose the monkey fist knot scheme as its official logo because the founders of the company believe that AI has the potential to be a powerful force for good in the world. The contoured emblem is accompanied by a modest sans-serif lettering, which features the same thickness of the bars, as the lines of the monkey fist.
Font and color
The medium-bold title case lettering on the primary version of the OpenAI logo is set in a simple sans-serif typeface with full-shape characters. The closest fonts to the one, used in this insignia, are, probably, Cerebri Sans, Gothic 725, or JT Collect, with some minor modifications.
As for the color palette of the OpenAI visual identity, its primary version uses a minimalistic combination of black and white, which stands for confidence and professionalism, while the secondary version of the logo is executed in a light shade of turquoise and white. In these colors, the company looks more creative and innovative.
