Nest is a revolutionary brand of smart home devices, which has been a part of Google Corporation since 2014. Today Google Nest is one of the most famous producers of smart speakers.
Meaning and history
Everyone learned about Nest Labs in 2011, after introducing the Nest Learning Thermostat. It was a revolutionary device, which started the rapid development of smart home systems. A couple of years later, the company introduced Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
In 2014, Nest was acquired by Google, but Nest continued to operate independently of Google as a subsidiary of Alphabet, Inc. Shortly thereafter, Nest acquired its app, Dropcam. The company then added surveillance cameras to its ever-growing suite of smart home products.
Nest remained separate from Google until 2018 when it finally merged with Google’s hardware division. After Google and Nest merged, Google renamed Google Home Hub to Google Nest Hub. It also announced that Google Nest would become the new brand for smart home products.
Today, Brand’s most popular product is the smart speaker. The Google Nest audio smart speaker is an active speaker system with high-quality sound, voice control, and support for Google Assistant technology. The device can connect on command with other speakers to create a stereo sound and other audio configurations, and can also control the devices of the “smart home”.
The Nest speaker has a machine-learning processor that helps improve the performance of the equipment. As Google assures you, the new speaker can remember your most common music requests and commands for the smart home, allowing for faster response times.
What is Nest?
Nest is the name of a smart home gadget brand founded in 2010 and bought by Google in 2014. Since 2018, all Nest products have been under the Google brand. In addition to Google Nest speakers and Nest Learning Thermostat, the line includes Nest Hello Doorbell, Nest Hub, and Nest Cam.
In terms of visual identity, the history of the Nest brand can be split into two main periods: pre-Google, and post-merger. Even though, the main color of the composition remained the same — light gray, the style of the insignia was dramatically changed.
2010 – 2018
The original Nest logo, designed in 2010, featured a stylized lowercase lettering in medium-gray, set in a unique sans-serif typeface with the first letters glued to each other, and the last two — merged. Executed in bold lines, the logo looked very modern and confident even without bright details and additional ornaments. This badge stayed active even after the acquisition of Nest by Google, which happened in 2014.
2018 – Today
After the official merger of Nest and Google in 2018, the logo of the brand was significantly changed. The new logo of the company is composed of two parts — the iconic Google icon, set in the corporate color palette, consisting of Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue, and a modest minimalistic “Nest” wordmark, executed in the title case of a simple sans-serif font, using the same shade of gray, as the one from the original version of the logo.
Font and color
The clean medium-weight lettering from the primary Google Nest logo is set in the title case of a traditional sans-serif typeface, which looks very close to such fonts as Rosanova HUM Regular, Janna Regular, or Aribau Grotesk Regular, with some minor modifications.
As for the color palette of the Google Nest visual identity, it is based on the corporate Google scheme, and a medium shade of gray, which represents stability, professionalism, and confidence in the products’ quality.
