Meaning and history

MySQL Logo history

MySQL is one of the most popular tools that helps to store and manage data. The secret of the system’s popularity is that it is characterized by flexibility, lightness, and, of course, ease of use. MySQL works on the principle of client-server. That is, the client sends a request, and the database server processes it and provides an answer.

MySQL is a relational database management system (RDBMS), which is distributed as free software. MySQL is mainly used for medium to small projects. It is open source, so any developer can familiarize themselves with it.

MySQL was born in the mid-1990s, in response to the explosive growth of the Internet, when medium-sized webmasters and startup owners needed simple and inexpensive systems rather than complex and costly ones. MySQL ideally suited the request, thanks to the ease of customization and its availability, because from the beginning the system is distributed under the free license GNU GPL – that is, it can be used absolutely free, but only for non-commercial purposes.

Now MySQL system is supported by the famous Oracle company and an independent community of enthusiastic developers.

???? – 1999

The original logo of the MySQL system featured quite a naive, yet good for its times, composition of shadowed lettering in two styles and colors. The dark red cursive “My” in the lowercase was placed diagonally in the upper left corner of the composition, while the “SQL” was written in the center, using stable black capitals of an elegant serif font. The composition was followed by a red and white tag with the name of the developer.

1999 – 2001

The redesign of 1999 has kept only the main part of the MySQL logo, redrawing it in a flat style, and intensifying the color palette. The cursive lowercase “My” was now set in a bright shade of red, and outlined in yellow, just like the stable and bold black capitals of the “SQL” part. This version of the badge stayed with the system for about two years.

2002 – 2010

In 2002 a completely new concept for MySQL was created. The system got its animal mascot and it was a dolphin. The sea creature was drawn in delicate blue contours, diving out of the uppercase orange “SQL”, set in a softened geometric sans-serif font, on the right from the title case “My” in blue. This badge became the basis for future redesigns.

2011 – Today

MySQL Logo

The MySQL logo consists of a wordmark with an emblem on its left. It is pretty simple and laconic, yet well-recognizable across the globe.

The MySQL name’s inscription is executed in a modern sans-serif typeface, where the letters are slightly extended and have smooth sleek liked with rounded angles.

The “My” is colored blue, while the “SQL” is orange. The company’s name was formed from the founder’s daughter’s name (My) and an abbreviation of Structured Query Language.

The emblem of the company, a dolphin silhouette, is placed at the end of the wordmark, and moves up and left. The kind and playful animal is a symbol of friendship, support, and protection. Dolphin also represents balance and harmony.

The blue and orange color combination of the MySQL logo is a representation of the stable and reputable company, which values security and quality of services. It also reflects the authority and professionalism of the brand, evoking a sense of reliability and confidence.
