The “Mafia” series is a popular series of action-adventure video games. All three parts of the Mafia differ radically from each other, even if their plots are partially connected. Each is based on a strong story that tells about the everyday life of mafia families and the criminal world in general from a unique angle. Such impartiality in relation to the chosen topic is almost impossible to find in video games. The games are set in fictional cities that resemble real-life locations in America during the early to mid-20th century. The atmosphere captures the essence of the gangster era, complete with vintage cars, period-appropriate music, and a stylized visual aesthetic.
Meaning and History
The legendary series began to emerge in the office of the Czech studio Illusion Softworks in late 1998 – the developer is known for its tactical shooter Hidden & Dangerous (1999). Based on its game engine, they began to make Mafia – the game was initially called Gangster and was supposed to be released in 2000. For multiple reasons, the release was delayed by 2 years. Despite the obvious success of the original, the sequel was delayed by as many as 8 years. The third series was published in 2016. Mafia: Definitive Edition (2020) is a full remake of the original game, developed using a new game engine
What is Mafia?
Mafia is an amazing game trilogy that reveals all the ins and outs of the difficult life of gangsters with its inherent shootouts, chases, and betrayals. Each game is a cinematic story that is remembered for a long time. In this story, there is a place for drama, gangster showdowns, and unexpected plot twists.
2002
The logo features a stylized, bold design that embodies the themes of crime and power. The crime is mainly reflected in the black silhouette of a man with a machine gun on the right side of the logo. In the background, it features white buildings with a red sky. The red color gives it both a powerful look and hints at the fact that the city is filled with crime scenes. The game name is printed in white using a bold, geometric font and all caps right underneath. All the elements are placed on a black vertical rectangle. This made the logo resemble a game poster rather than a logo.
2010
The designer preserved the color palette and style of the logo. This time, the black rectangle is placed horizontally. The white, contrasting inscription now takes up the majority of the space. To the right, there is a very smart play with the silhouette and series number. The black silhouette of a gangster fills the empty space between the vertical lines forming Roman number II. With a pistol and machine gun in his hands, the character looks almost undefeatable. The red color of the number behind enhances the dramatic and impressive imagery.
2016
For this logo, only the colors remained unchanged. The “Mafia” inscription is done using a different bold, sans-serif font. The letters and series number slightly overlap at the bottom, creating an intense feeling. It is worth noting that the logo no longer features a man’s silhouette. Nonetheless, the logo design looks striking and memorable, reflecting the serious and criminal atmosphere of the game series.
Font and Color
The first two series feature a bold, sans-serif font that resembles Aurora Bold Condensed font. The arched shape of the letter “A” resembles a bullet, which is an undeniable element in the game. For the third series, the strokes are straight but still bold and heavy. The font looks similar to Cairoli Classic Heavy font, but with letters slightly overlapping.
The color scheme is dark and moody. All the logo versions use shades of black, red, and white to convey a sense of danger and intrigue. Both red and black are considered to be strong and powerful colors. The red is closely linked to the crime. Meanwhile, the black reflects the dark side of society, as well as the mystery and secrets of mafia groups. The white makes both colors stand out.
