Meaning and History
In 2002, Spencer Charnas and Jeremy Schwartz formed a band called “Ice Nine Kills” inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s “Cat’s Cradle.” Originally known as “Ice Nine”, the name was chosen to reference a fictional polymorphic substance called “Ice-9,” which crystallizes water and can be used as a weapon. The group’s songs were based on blood-curdling horror works. The band recorded an album of 10 songs for their own money without labels, but it didn’t gain much popularity but the band got its first fans. In 2007, the EP “The Burning” was released, and the group began to change and become more like its modern self. In 2010, new musicians joined the group, characterized by high technical performance. This new era of Ice Nine Kills began with the release of their debut full-length album “Last Chance to Make Amends” in 2006.

The logo is meant to reflect the horror theme of the band. The name is printed in two lines that are centered. For the inscription, the designer chose a stylized bracketed slab serif rough font and all caps. The characters a closely spaced and some of them have spikes. These are meant to represent the icicles, which are part of the name. In addition, they resemble sharp weapons often featured in horror films. The black finish of the characters looks as if it was scratched and worn out, enhancing the dramatic and frightening aesthetic. The overall design captures the band’s blend of heavy music and horror film influences, making it instantly recognizable to fans.
