Hamas is a Palestinian Islamist movement. Hamas has political and military blocs. It controls the Gaza Strip, from where it launches attacks on Israel, with financial and material support from some countries. Hamas has taken a radical position since its founding. Even the movement’s emblem depicts the outline of the region as it was before the formation of Israel in 1948. Having come to power after winning the elections to the Palestinian Legislative Council, Hamas actively began to build up the military power of the Palestinian Authority.

Meaning and History

Hamas was formed at the end of 1987 by activists of the Palestinian branch of the international Islamist movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, which first appeared in Palestine after World War II. Its full name means “Islamic Resistance Movement.”  The group carried out its first armed action in 1989. One of its most recent operations started in the fall of 2023. As a response, the Israeli government declared martial law for the first time since 1973.

What is Hamas?
A Palestinian organization called Hamas was founded to resist Israeli occupation. It is well-known for using militant tactics, like as tunnel warfare and rocket assaults, against Israel.  It also conducts active ideological propaganda among the population and children.

Hamas Logo

The Hamas emblem depicts two crossed swords against the background of the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, which is a significant religious site in Jerusalem and holds deep importance for Palestinians. The swords emphasize the organization’s militant aspect. The logo is framed by Palestinian flags. The flags have the words “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” on one side and “There is no God but Allah” on the other (both are in Arabic). At the top is the outline of a Palestinian state occupying the territory of Israel. At the very bottom of the logo, there is a large green banner with the words “Islamic Resistance Movement – Hamas” printed in white. As apparent, the logo has a lot of symbolism.
