Dolby Atmos is the name of a sound-technology, which was first introduced in 2012 by Dolby Lab. By today the technology is used in more than six thousand locations worldwide and is considered to be one of the market’s leaders in surround-sound.

Meaning and history

The Dolby Atmos technology was first introduced in Los Angeles in 2012, so the original logo was created in the same year, fully based on the iconic Dolby emblem, just with the “Atmos” addition in the end. This first logo is still used by the brand along with the new one, designed in 2019.

2012 — Today

The original Dolby Atmos logo was composed of a monochrome emblem, where two bold white letters “D” were placed mirrored on a black horizontal rectangle. This Dolby symbol is one of the most recognizable images in the world’s cinema industry and equals to a high quality. The lettering, placed on the right from the emblem featured all letters capitalized, with the “Dolby” part in its custom bold sans-serif, and “Atmos” in a lighter font. Sometimes the “Dolby” part of the wordmark is removed from the logo, or on the contrary is enlarged and placed on the top level.

2019 — Today

In 2019 the concept of the Dolby Atmos visual identity was slightly changed — the letters “D” is now colored black and placed on the left from the inscription, without any framing. The wordmark was also redrawn and today it featured a rounded sans-serif lettering in a title case, with the first part of the nameplate in heavyweight, and the second — is light and elegant. There is also a version of this logo where “Dolby” boasts a larger size of the letters and is placed above “Atmos”, which is written in capitals.
