The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) is a national network of more than 30 independent, locally operated organizations that work under one recognizable brand.  Each of these businesses offers health insurance coverage, including Medicaid, employer-sponsored group, and individual and family health plans.  They also cover vision and dental care. The BCBS companies operate in specific geographic areas and adjust benefits, coverage options, and premiums to fit the local needs and preferences.

Meaning and History

Blue Cross Blue Shield Logo history

Blue Cross was formed in 1929 by Justin Ford Kimball. Blue Cross offered healthcare coverage to instructors.  In 1960, it changed its name to the Blue Cross Association.  Blue Shield started its operation a little later (1939) and covered physician services. It was set up by workers of timber and mining camps in the Pacific Northwest, who were dealing with sickness and work dangers. In the 1960s, the federal government chose these two organizations to manage Medicare coverage.  In 1978, they combined their staff and operations before merging to establish the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association in 1982.

1982 – Today

The organization’s logo is quite recognizable thanks to its symbolic elements. The upper half of the logo features a blue cross with a human silhouette in a circle next to a shield of the same color that has a Caduceus in the center. The details inside the symbols are done in white, which adds a clean, crisp touch. The cross has long been associated with healthcare services, while the shield is meant to stand for protection that the insurance offers. The symbols inside them also stand for the care and health. The combination of these two symbols represents the comprehensive healthcare solutions offered by the organization. The symbols are accompanied by the name, “Blue Cross Blue Shield Association,” printed in a clean, easy-to-read font.

2009 – Today

The logo was slightly modified in 2009, although the old version was still used. First of all, the designer took the cross and shield symbols and set them on the left. The name lost the word “Association.” These changes transformed the logo into a horizontal rectangle instead of a vertically elongated version. In addition, the logo acquired a modern, simple font without serifs. A watchful eye will notice that the shield has the Asclepius symbol instead of the caduceus, strengthening its focus on medical care. Otherwise, the logo remained recognizable and did not lose its original idea.
