Sunrises Hyderabad is one of the ten cricket teams, which compete in the Indian Premier League. The club was founded in 2008 as Deccan Chargers and was owned by the Deccan Chronicle, a reputable Indian Newspaper. In 212 the team was bought by the SUN Group.

Meaning and history

SUN Group was established in India over 100 years ago and is controlled by the family of Indian tycoon Nanda Khemka. SUN Group is a private investment group owned by the Khemka family, active in India, as well as in Europe and the United States. SUN Group is engaged in private equity, real estate, venture capital, and asset management in various industries. Since 2012, the company owns one of the ten strongest cricket teams in India, SunRisers Hyderabad.

In the first chapter of the team’s history, while being Deccan Chargers, they won the Indian Premier League championship in 2009, but the franchise was terminated in 2012, and it went for an auction, which was won by the SUN Group. After the acquisition of the club, it was renamed to SunRisers Hyderabad and got a completely new visual identity.

Today the SunRisers have the Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, Telangana as their home ground, and are coached by Daniel Vettori, a former cricket player from New Zealand. The captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad is Patrick James Cummings, a famous Australian athlete, known as an all-time great fast bowler.

2008 – 2009

The first logo, designed for Deccan Chargers in 2008, featured a a brutal crest in red and black, with the image of a bull, drawn in black and white; with its fierce eyes colored red. The image was accompanied by two leveled lettering above it and a circular medallion with the DC monogram at the bottom.

2009 – 2012

In 2009 the Deccan Chargers logo was modernized and became more sleek and stylish. The shape of the crest got smoother and narrower, and the color palette switched to gray, blue, and red. Now the background of the badge featured a gradient gray, with the Bull redrawn in black and white, and its eyes white too. The lettering turned red and blue, and got executed in a modern sans-serif font with a diagonal bar of the “A”.

2012 – Today

The redesign of 2012 followed the rename of the club to Sunrisers Hyderabad. The new badge is based on an image of a bright red eagle drawn with its wings widely spread and its head turning to the left. The name of the team is written on two banners, placed on the body of the bird, with the enlarged “SunRisers” arched to the top and enlarged, and the “Hyderabad” in small caps on a red banner, arched to the bottom. The head of the eagle is surrounded by short yellow rays.

Font and color

The stylized lettering from the primary SunRisers Hyderabad logo is set in the uppercase of a custom designer typeface with thick lines and the horizontal bars of the “R” and both “E”s elongated to the left. The font is based on a geometric serif type, which might be whether Cintra Slab, or Beaus Varsity, but with significant modifications.

As for the color palette of the Sunrisers Hyderabad visual identity, it is based on a bright shade of red, with the addition of white and yellow, which make the composition more vivid and delightful.
