No wonder that all these hundreds of emoji, from funny, cheerful, to sad faces, various pictures and gestures to own far not so easy as it seems at first glance. Although some emoticons are quite clear on an intuitive level, others are not obvious, both in terms of meaning and application. Hand emoticons are one such example for many. The question of interpretations here can be quite extensive. Today we will draw your attention to one of the hand emoticons, namely the Strong Emoji depicting the biceps.

💪 The Biceps emoji was assigned the code U+1F4AA, with which it was added to the People and Body section of the Unicode 6.0 standard in 2010.

Meaning of the Strong Emoji

While women are more likely to use them during the day, a 2016 Emogi study found that 55% of monthly or weekly emoji users and 51% of daily emoji users are men. And one of the most popular emoji among men is, of course, the Strong Emoji.

The Strong Emoji in the shape of a pumped up biceps is used to indicate “strength or workout”. This emoji is also often used as a sign of support and faith in someone. Or you can signify a person’s potential, ambition, and perseverance with it.

Unicode notes that in 2021, the meaning that senders gave to the “flexed biceps” emoji changed – it used to denote strength, success, or exercise, and during the pandemic, this emoticon became a symbol for a rolled up sleeve to receive a vaccine. After COVID, though, the meaning returned to its original state.

Even today, the Pumped Biceps Symbol is used to denote strength, passion for bodybuilding or strength training.

Speaking of which, Republicans in the US noticed some similarities between String Eloji and an elephant’s trunk, which served as an idea for a creative campaign. So today this emoji is often used to praise the strength, courage and bravery of heroes.

The Use of the Strong Emoji

So, as we have already realized above, the Strong Emoji is usually used as a depiction of forceful superiority over a character, circumstances, a winning stance towards something, pride and/ or bragging about one’s grounded, solid roles. However, that’s not all.

Emoji that cause rejection when used frequently include a picture of a hand showing off muscles. This symbol simply means physical strength or exercise, but it is sometimes added out of place.

A study conducted by dating app Clover among 3 million users found that women react negatively to the following emojis: eggplant, clapping hands, flexed biceps and fist bump.

Even an obvious emoji like biceps, which would be associated with strength or success in some area, has a very different meaning in some countries. While for most users the biceps emoji means nothing more than Strength, Arabs see it as a hint of odor under the arms.


As you can see, even such simple at first glance emoticons can not be perceived by everyone in the same way. So, when sending a biceps emoji in your message, you better make sure that your conversation partner is on the same wavelength with you and will correctly perceive your colorful text. And, of course, don’t forget about the studies showing that girls have a negative attitude towards receiving Strong Emoji messages from men.
