nWo, also known as the New World Order, was an influential faction in professional wrestling. It played a prominent part in the success of World Championship Wrestling during the Monday Night Wars.

Meaning and History

The storyline behind nWo was that it was a villainous group of unsanctioned wrestlers terrorizing World Championship Wrestling stars with the goal of taking WCW over. The idea belonged to WCW executive Eric Bischoff, who was inspired by the way people often admire anti-heroes. The group was created in 1996, its first members being Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and Hulk Hogan. The fictional story behind the faction created an intrigue that made the group popular. It was inducted into the 2020 WWE Hall of Fame.

Guy Evans shared the history behind the logo in his book “Beyond Nitro: Untold Stories from the WCW era.” The author of the design was Jenni Sloan, who worked for Disney/MGM Studios, which in 1996 hosted live episodes of WCW Monday Nitro.

The texture of the wordmark reminds spray paint. This idea was introduced by Neal Pruitt, former feature producer for World Championship Wrestling. In that way, the logo reminds the marks street gangs use to tag their territory.

Jenni Sloan claims she got only a couple of instructions as to what the logo should be like: “in a type-written face,” “rough,” “ragged edges.” “It’s the quickest logo in my life,” Sloan acknowledges. When she showed the original design to people from WCW, they insisted it “had to be rougher.” So, Sloan hand-drew some of the edges to make them look really jagged.

Also, it was her decision to replace the original capitalized wordmark “N.W.O.” with the stylized version “nWo.” She can’t remember any other reason behind the idea except that she assumed it “looked cool.” Sloan cites New Age and punk as her influences when working on the logo.

The hand-drawn style of the letters was chosen deliberately – the wordmark should have looked like it was just written on the wall. The original design was in black and white, but later, other color combinations have also been used for additional versions.
