John A. Logan College is a public education institution, based in Carterville, Illinois, the United States. This relatively young college (established at the end of the 1960s), offers two-year programs and is affiliated with Illinois Universities with a four-year program.

Meaning and history

John A. Logan College was established in 1967 and got its first students enrolled in 1969. A year later, in 1969, JALC got its permanent campus in Carterville, Illinois. The name of the college is a tribute to John Alexander Logan, an American Civil War General, who was born in 1826 and died in 1886.

Logan served the state of Illinois for a decade, being first of all a state representative  (a member of a lower house of the Illinois General Assembly), a Congressman in the United States House of Representatives, and a U. S. senator.

The badge is composed of an enlarged stylized letter “L” with a curved and flared horizontal bar, which makes the character look like a mirrored letter “J”, which makes sense regarding the name of the college.

The letter is accompanied by a stylized portrait of the famous American General, John Alexander Logan, with his long curved mustache, supporting the elongated tail of the letter.

The lettering under the primary John A. Logan College badge is set in the title case of an elegant serif typeface with traditional contours of the characters and sharp serifs on the ends of the bars. The closest fonts to the one, used in this insignia, are, probably, Baskerville Regular Old Face, or Isolde Bold, with some minor modifications.
