Rick and Morty is a show, aired on Adult Swim. It’s a popular adult sitcom; one of the most popular such shows currently. It follows the story of a mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty, who get into all sorts of intergalactic adventures. Each episode is usually a new story, although there are also fragments of a common plot throughout the series.

Meaning and History

The unique and offbeat cartoon Rick and Morty became one of the most popular animated series of the last decades. The series was created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon and was produced as part of the Adult Swim block on Cartoon Network.

Rick and Morty began as a hooligan parody of the Back to the Future movie series in 2006. To create the characters, the screenwriter and producer used the images of Doc Brown and Marty McFly, whom they changed to a darker side. That’s how the famous characters came to be. Rick Sanchez, the scientist who invented the portal gun and uses it to move through time and space; and Morty Smith, Rick’s grandson and his main assistant and partner, an insecure teenager.

Most Rick and Morty episodes tell self-contained stories that do not affect the main plot. However, there are exceptions. The authors of “Rick and Morty” have come up with countless universes and alternate versions of the characters.

The first season aired in 2013 and consisted of 11 episodes. As of 2024, seven seasons of the legendary animated series have already been released, and the release of the eighth is announced for 2025. Also, recently it became known that Adult Swim ordered the production of the eleventh and twelfth seasons of the comedy animated series so that for a few more years we can safely count on new even more interesting series about the adventures of the favorite Rick and Morty.

The show’s main logo is also a title card, which means it just says the name in a single line. The names of both main characters are written in big letters, while the ‘and’ in the middle is much smaller. They don’t use a typical typeface, but instead have a fluid, rippling style for these letters. The coloring is usually turquoise with yellow rims.

The style is a reference to the portal fluid, used extensively in the show to transport between dimensions, realities and just space. Portals in the show have a similar appearance and are caused by shooting this liquid into the air.
