Xfinity is the name of the Comcast company brand for television and Internet offerings. The new brand name and logo were introduced by Comcast in 2010. Comcast products were later renamed XFINITY products. The name change applies only to consumer services and products, not business-level services. Comcast is the world’s largest broadcast and cable television company by revenue. Comcast Corporation is an American telecommunications conglomerate.
Comcast Cable Communications has been in existence since the early 1980s. It has been providing television services to American residents for more than 35 years. Comcast provided its users with an Internet subscription by 1990. Much of the company’s focus has traditionally been on sports programming, exclusive broadcasts, and the Olympics.
Comcast Corporation offered its customers a large number of products and services. But Comcast was known as a provider of television and Internet services. By 2010, Comcast was on its way to merge with the National Broadcasting Company (NBC). Thus, Comcast’s branding and marketing experts concluded that it would be incomprehensible to keep calling a huge combination of products and services “Comcast,” and they thought that would affect Comcast’s merger with NBC. To overcome this dilemma, they introduced a new brand for television and Internet offerings: XFINITY.
So the first three logos were created for Comcast, and the Xfinity one only appeared in 2010.
The initial Comcast logo featured a black and white composition with a TV-like emblem (a black background and white “CC” monogram, where one letter was set inside another), placed on the left from the bold and horizontally extended uppercase wordmark in a modern sans-serif typeface.
The redesign of 2000 brought a thin touch of color to the Comcast visual identity. It was an arched red line, framing the first letter “C” from its left. The logotype got switched to the lowercase and its typeface was changed to a more elegant and traditional sans-serif with rounded shapes and distinct ends of the lines.
In 2007 the logo was slightly modernized — it was only about the typeface, although went almost unnoticed, as only very small details (such as the uppercut of the letter “T”) were changed. The overall mood, composition, and color palette remained untouched.
The Xfinity brand appeared in 2010, and the new logo was introduced in the same year. It was a modern sans-serif logotype in classic red, with no fonts above both letters “I”, and with the tails of the “X” and “Y” elongated. The letters were executed in thick bars with diagonal cuts and a bit softened angles.
The redesign of 2017 brightened up the red shade of the Xfinity logotype and refined the lettering, making the lines thinner, and the contours more distinct and neat. These small changes made the whole image stranger and more contemporary, showing the powerful character of the brand and its progressiveness.
In 2021 the Xfinity logo was changed again, but this time it was only about the color. The classic red shade was replaced by bright purple, which seems to be more “technological”. All the lines, contours, and sizing of the letters remained untouched.
The Xfinity logo is executed in a fancy and stylish sans-serif typeface, which is pretty close to such fonts as Neue Radial Book and Merrant Regular, but with the dots above the “I”s removed, and the lines of some letters elongated and softened. These details are what make the whole inscription memorable and eye-catching.
The purple-on-white color palette makes the Xfinity emblem stand out on the list of its competitors due to the strong contrast and some playfulness in it. Purple is a color of wisdom and creativity, but it also looks very confident and progressive with the right shapes, and the Xfinity badge has them.
