Unus Annus is the name of one of the most unusual channels on YouTube, which was created in 2019, and closed in 2020. The channel was founded by two video bloggers Mark Markiplier Fischbach and Ethan Crankgameplays Nestor, with the idea of posting one video every day for just one year.
The Unus Annus channel is something unique in the history of YouTube and social media in general. The channel was thought of as something that would be “killed” in 365 days, but the encounter of subscribers and the popularity of Unus Annus made everyone doubt, that the creators would do that. Although, they did.
The idea came to Mark Markiplier Fischbach (27.5 million subscribers) and Ethan Crankgameplays Nestor (1.8 million subscribers), in 2018. At the end of the year, they announced the new concept and introduced Inus Annus to the subscribers. The channel itself was devoted to all kinds of content, from cooking tutorials and DIY clips to quests and adult toys reviews. The bloggers have been posting one video every day for 365 days.
And exactly 365 days after the channel was launched, on November 13, 2020, after twelve hours of live streaming, the creators deleted the channel live. Of course, the show was made out of it too. The live broadcast gained more than 1,5 million viewers.
The authors of the channel do their best for the videos from the deleted Unus Annus to not appear anywhere else, as this kills the whole experiment, which turned out to be super successful.
What is Unus Annus?
Unus Annus is the name of a 365-day YouTube project, created by Mark Fischbach and Ethan Nestor in 2019. The channel, which name is translated from Latin as “One Year”, had one video posted on it per day, and was deleted right on its first birthday.
As for the visual identity, the authors of the channel stuck to the black and white palette from the start. During the presentation and launch of the channel, the bloggers appeared in black and white suits, and the logo of Unus Annus is executed in the same color scheme.
The visual identity of the one-year YouTube channel is composed of two independent parts: the official bold and geometric logo with the name of the channel, and the graphical emblem, with detailed elements and lots of small thin strokes.
The main badge is a horizontally placed rectangular, diagonally divided into black and white triangles, with the bold sans-serif lettering set in two levels in the same black-and-white color palette.
As for the Unus Annus graphical emblem, it is a representation of “Memento Morí”. Hourglass with a skull in each compartment, drawn with a dark gothic mood. The sand, coming from the upper compartment and covering the skull at the bottom is symbolizing that the moment of the channel’s closure is approaching.
