The athletic logo of the University of Massachusetts Lowell reflects the “Hawks” theme suggested by the nickname.
UMass Lowell River Hawks is the Collegiate athletic program of the University of Massachusetts Lowell, established in the middle of the 1890s and located in Haverhill. The program of this public research university is composed of 16 men’s and women’s sports clubs, which compete in the first division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in such sport disciplines as Basketball, Baseball, Ice Hockey, Soccer, and several more.
All teams of UMass Lowell River Hawks but the men’s ice hockey club, are members of the America East Conference. As for the hockey team, it competes as a part of the Hockey East Conference.
The UMass Lowell River Hawks badge, introduced in 1997, has stayed with the program for almost ten years. It was a bright red, blue and white emblem with a funny caricature of a hawk outlined in blue and placed against a solid red roundel, surrounded by the geometric sans-serif lettering in the uppercase, with the bodies of the characters colored red, and a thin outline in blue.
The badge of the Umass Lowell River Hawks, created in 2006, featured a bright and modern combination of a stylized logotype and a fancy ornate image of a hawk in red, blue, white, and light gray. The bush was drawn on a background with caricature waves, which became an interesting prolongation of the wings. As for the inscription, it was set in two levels — with the “Umass Lowell” in white and gray bold sans-serif, and a slightly diagonal and arched “River Hawks” in blue and red.
The redesign of the UMass Lowell River Hawks logo, held in 2012, has created a predecessor of the today’s program’s badge, with the aggressive red Hawk in a thick blue outline, placed against a clean white background and accompanied by a white lettering, executed in a heavy slightly slanted sans-serif font, and outlined in blue and red.
You can see the side view of a red bird with the blue trim on the current UMass Lowell River Hawks logo. There is a double-line wordmark below the emblem with the words “Umass Lowell” in white on the top and “River Hawks” in blue below.
