While the athletic program of Towson University in Towson, Maryland, used to be officially named the Towson College Knights, their current official name is the Towson Tigers.

Meaning and history

Towson University is the largest university in the Baltimore area and the second largest university in the University System of Maryland. The institution is based on the School of Education, established in 1866 and in 1967 merged with 10 state institutions, receiving the current name.

Towson University is among the top 100 best universities in the United States and ranks fifth in the list of the best universities in the state of Maryland. Of course, the main criteria for the ranking lie in the university’s academic program, but its athletic policy is also worth noting.

The Athletic Program of Towson University, established under the name Towson College Knights, today is called the Towson Tigers and consists of 19 men’s and women’s teams, which compete in the first division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association as a part of the Coastal Athletic Association. The TU sponsors more than ten sports disciplines, including Baseball, Basketball, Field Hockey, Gymnastics, and others.

1977 – 1979

The first logo was a circular seal with a tiger’s head colored black and orange inside. The seal was drawn using black, white and orange colors. In the white area of the logo, there was an inscription ‘Towson State University ‘Tigers’. It had a custom serif typeface.

1979 – 1985

The next logo by Tigers was a white rectangle split in two parts by a black line. In the upper part there was the ‘TSU’ acronym, written in a capitalized sans serif font. In the lower area of the rectangle, they put the name of the organization. A tiger stood on top of the rectangle.

1985 – 1995

The 1985 logotype depicted a human-like tiger, who wore a t-shirt with the ‘TSU’ acronym on it.

1995 – 1997

The 1997 logo featured an orange tiger with a dangerous grin. He put his hands on the inscription ‘Towson State’, written in one line, using capitalized serif font with black colored gaps between letters.

1997 – 2002

The logo of Towson Tigers created in 1997 featured a bright yellow and black combination of a graphical emblem placed above the stylized logotype in two levels. The upper part of the badge featured an image of a tiger. The animal looked serious and dangerous, reflecting the character and mood of the teams. As for the lettering, the “Towson” part was enlarged and placed above the “University” in all capitals of a bold geometric sans-serif typeface. The yellow letters of the inscription were all outlined in black.

2002 – 2011

This logo showed the word ‘Towson’, written in a sharp font, where the upper line of the letter ‘T’ was elongated and covered the rest of the word. Below it was the head of a tiger, drawn half-face. It was made using black, orange and white colors.

2011 – Today

Both the current Towson Tigers logo and the previous one dwell on the tiger as its main element. On the current emblem, we can see the side view of a tiger’s head with its mouth open. There are sharp fangs that somehow “rhyme” with the way the word “Towson” is written above. The palette combines black and yellow.
