Terraria is a super popular video game, known all over the globe. For many, this game is about freedom. It deliberately sets no boundaries but time: clear day soon gives way to night, zombies and flesh-eating flying eyes crawl out from somewhere, so you’d better get a shelter by evening.
Terraria offers to create a character but does not set any of his characteristics, except appearance. Then it generates a new game world… And suddenly you find yourself in the middle of the wild steppe. On the left rises a low hill, on the right goes into the unexplored depths of a deep cave. Behind the soul of your hero in the meantime only a pair of tools – an ax and a pickaxe, with which he must build a future. What it will be entirely up to you.
What is Terraria?
Terraria is a famous video game, which was released in 2011. Created in a genre of sandbox games, Terraria is one of the world’s most famous brands in this genre, with more than 49 million copies sold all over the globe. Terraria has its versions available for various platforms, including PC, mobile devices, and consoles.
The initial logo of Terraria was just a bit more delicate and small version of the one we all can see today. The brown soil lettering on a green grass background was more contrasting and only the size of the letter varied from how the logo started looking in 202. The same was for the tree, set on the left from the wordmark. Smaller and darker.

As the game about a new world, a new land, Terraria has a pretty meaningful visual identity. Although it is very simple and even naive on one hand. The logo, executed in a green and brown color palette, is composed of stylized lettering, set on a contoured background, and an emblem, placed on its left, with a small white space in between the elements.
The whole logo is based on the images of grass, souls, and trees. The soil-brown lettering on a grass-green background, repeating the contours of the wordmark, and the separately standing tree, which combines both colors in it. A symbolic metaphor.
The whole game is built around shuttle mechanics: run underground to get new materials, create something new to run underground again. There is no final goal, just a process, an exciting exploration of the world and your possibilities. Hunting for rare minerals, raids into dark caves in the hope to find the accidentally fallen somewhere behind a rock magic wand that shoots lightning – this is what the player lives in Terraria.
The Terraria logotype is executed in a custom hand-drawn sans-serif with smooth bold lines and uneven edges. The wordmark is set in a title case, but the lowercase letters are pretty big, so there is no huge difference in size between the first capital “T” and other letters. The softness of the bars and rounded contours make the whole logo look friendly and kind.
As for the brown and green color palette, as already mentioned above, it is a reflection of the game’s plot and idea. Although there two colors also mean Life and growth, and when working together, they symbolized creation and life.
The Terraria Icon is a brown and green pixel tree, resembling if adventurous and mystical fairy tales, and showing the character of the game, and what the player can expect there.
The pixel tree has two short branches placed on the bottom part of its trunk. They evoke a sense of stability and a somehow grounding feeling, while the game is all about creating a new reality, and this is what makes the icon interesting.
Simple shapes and symbols are balanced by bright green color, set in a gradient ground trunk of the tree and symbolizing progress and artistic souls of the developers as players.
