One of the most well-known professional American football teams, Philadelphia Eagles went through several logos before sticking to the current one.

Brand Overview

Since its founding in 1933, the Philadelphia Eagles football team has played in the National Football League. In 1970 the club started playing in the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference. The Eagles play all their home games at Lincoln Financial Field.

The history of the club was rich on successful moments. The team won the division in 1947 and then won the league championship two years in a row. A series of injuries in the mid-1950s led to a worsening of results, but in 1960 Philadelphia won the NFL championship again.

In 1961, the Eagles lost in the conference finals, and then began a bad period that saw the team fail to make the playoffs for eighteen consecutive years. But each unsuccessful period ends sooner or later.

In 1980, Philadelphia scored twelve wins, setting a club record, winning the National Football Conference Finals against Dallas, and reaching the Super Bowl for the first time in its history.

In 2017 the quarterback of the Eagles, Nick Foles, got the most prestigious football award, Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award.  Today Foles plays for Indianapolis Colts.

Although the Philadelphia Eagles have made the playoffs very often in their history, the first Super Bowl victory did not happen until 2018.

Meaning and history

The visual identity concept of the Philadelphia Eagles club is one of the most constant in American football history, as it has always been built around the image of an eagle with a football, executed in whether green or blue color palette and only two of the versions varied.

What are Philadelphia Eagles?
Philadelphia Eagles are the name of a professional football club in the United States, which was established in 1933. Today the club plays in the East division of the National football league and has Lincoln Financial Field as its home arena and Nick Sirianni as the head coach.

1933 – 1935

The original emblem of Philadelphia eagles was drawn in a very traditional manner, with a lot of details. The eagle holding a football looked very realistic despite its blue color palette. It was an elegant and powerful image with the bird flying to the right and its wings spread up.

1936 – 1942

The color palette of the emblem was switched to green in 1936, along with the eagle’s contours redrawn. Now the bird was moving upright, and it could be seen in the direction of its wings and stretched neck. The ball on this version was enlarged and rounded in comparison to the initial logo.

1943

The image displays the iconic Philadelphia Eagles logo, which captures the essence of both the team and its namesake bird of prey. This emblem features the majestic figure of an eagle in descent, its wings arching upwards as it swoops down. The eagle’s talons are outstretched, it gripping a football, aligning with the sport the team is famous for. The logo is presented in a monochromatic silhouette, which gives it a sleek and modern appearance, ensuring that it stands out against any background. The eagle’s posture, with its wings raised and talons poised, conveys a sense of power, precision, and determination, reflecting the attributes that the Philadelphia Eagles aspire to demonstrate on the field. The overall design is streamlined yet dynamic, embodying the spirit of flight and the competitive nature of American football.

1944 – 1947

The redesign of 1944 modernized the eagle emblem and refined its contours. Now it was a solid green composition, where the bold silhouette of an eagle with a football featured only a couple of white details. The bird was looking down and had its wings spread up and to the sides.

1948 – 1968

The emblem got more details and white accents in 1948, with another redesign. The football was now mainly white and the eagle got its contours more realistic, though not like on the original emblem, it was now drawn in a more modern and bright manner.

1969 – 1972

The contours of the emblem gained square shapes and right angles in 1969, while the color palette remained untouched. Though green and white were still the only two colors of the composition, the image started looking different from the refinement of the shapes.

1973 – 1986

In 1973 the emblem of the Philadelphia Eagles was redesigned and now boasted an image of a bold green helmet with a delicate and sophisticated gray wing on its side. The bird’s wing was outlined in white and looked light yet powerful.

1987 – 1995

With the redesign of 1987, the Eagles badge got new colors in its palette — orange and brown were now used for the beak of the bird and the football. Another change was about the eagle’s direction, as now it was facing left.

1996 – Today

A completely new style and color palette were adopted by Philadelphia Eagles in 1996. That new sleek badge is still used by the football club today. It is composed of an eagle’s head placed in profile, facing left. The head is drawn in gradient white and gray, with a thick double outline in black and blue. The bird is drawn with sharp bold lines and looks strong and determined.

Font

The wordmark sports a unique typeface with sharp ends in the “E” and “S” letters, which can be compared with an eagle’s claws. All the letters are given in capitals.

Helmet

The eagle wings on the Philadelphia Eagles helmets have come a long way: from abstract smooth spots to distinctive modern images, which we all can see today. As for the colors of the helmets, here the team was more consistent and has been using a combination of silver and green for decades.

1948 – 1949

The first design of the Philadelphia Eagles helmets was quite abstract: the grass-green background was accompanied by a wide silverish element in the very center, with smooth wavy contours, very remotely resembling the silhouette of a bird’s wings. The silver part of the design was supported by the grille in the same shade.

1950 – 1954

In 1950 the helmets of the players turned solid green, with no additional elements on a glossy surface. For a smooth contrast, the grilles on the helmets remained silver-gray.

1955 – 1968

The redesign of 1955 introduced the first Philadelphia Eagles helmet design with a distinctive and readable wing. It was drawn in solid silver, on a green background, on the side, but closer to the center. The color of the wing was supported by the massive metallic grille.

1969

For the season of 1969, the wing on the helmet was redrawn in white, keeping the original contours. In a new color palette, the graphical element became more visible and the players started looking brighter on the field.

1969 – 1972

Later in the same year, the designers introduced another version of the helmet for the Philadelphia Eagles: now the helmet was painted white, and the wing became bright green. The only element( which has kept its original color was the grille, still silver.

1973

In 1973 a bold black outline was added to the image of a green wing, and the helmets of the Eagles players started looking even more brutal and aggressive when wearing them. However, this version of the helmet design stayed with the team for just one season.

1974 – 1995

Another version of Philadelphia Eagles helmets was introduced in 1974 and stayed with the team for more than twenty years. It was a solid green helmet with a silver wing drawn on it and outlined in white. The grille was also silver, balancing the look of the helmet and adding lightness to it.

1996 – Today

Philadelphia Eagles is the club with one of the most stylish and refined design of the helmets in NFL. For years the smooth midnight-green helms of the players were decorated by silverish eagle wings on the sides, with white accents and bold black outline.

Uniform

The uniform color palette of the Philadelphia Eagles football club is composed of four shades: midnight green, silver gray, black and white. Green is the most iconic color of the team, which makes its players in Scranton recognizable on the field. The shade looks unusual and very elegant.

There are three options for the Eagles uniform: the primary one with green jerseys and white pants, decorated by black, white and silver elements; the one with the white jersey and green pants, and the same decor; and the newest alternate uniform, executed in black with green and white details.
