Meaning and history

The Ohio State University is one of America’s largest and most comprehensive academic institutions. OSU is recognized as the best and one of the top 20 public universities in the state of Ohio and is also recognized as a top academic medical center, as well as a top cancer research center.

University seal

The visual identity of the university is composed of two parts: the historical seal, which has been a symbol of OSU for longer than a century, and a modern logo, suitable for digital needs and wide use on the web.

The historical seal of the Ohio State University is executed in a circular shape, with a classy triangular crest inside it. The crest features a vertically-striped pattern, and an image of an open book, enclosed into a ring-like frame. Book symbolizes knowledge and open opportunities, the university gives to its students.

At the bottom of the seal, you can see a delicate ribbon with the university’s motto in Latin “Disciplina In Civitatem”, which means “Education For Citizens”.

1870 – Today

The distinctive and neat logo of the Ohio State University, executed in a sleek burgundy and white color palette, features a four-leveled lettering in medium-weight geometric serif font written across the solid square banner.

The “Ohio State” part of the inscription is enlarged, and both “T”s are merged into the neighboring characters, leaving the central “A” stand out. As for the top, “The” line, it is written in smaller capitals of the same distinctive font, with small solid white dots placed between the letters.

Can I use the Ohio State logo?
The Ohio State University allows using its official logo with no restrictions, but under one condition: the badge can not be changed and should be used directly as it is. Hence, if you want to use the Ohio State logo, go forward, but do not modify it, so as not to get in trouble

Is Block O trademarked?
Yes, the Block O logo is a trademark, owned by the Ohio State University. However, Ohio State allows using its badge without any official licensing, but it should be kept in its original state with no changes made. If you use it for business purposes, you should accompany it with the “TM” sign.

Is Brutus Buckeye trademarked?
Brutus Buckeye is the name of the Ohio State University mascot, which was introduced in 1965, and is a registered trademark. Unlike its logo, the image of the Ohio State mascot can not be used without the official permission of the University.
