The inception of the LMU Loyola Marymount Lions, an emblematic athletic force, dates back to the historical merger of Loyola University (established in 1911) and Marymount College (founded in 1923). This fusion in 1973 birthed not just a new educational institution in Los Angeles, California, but also a formidable presence in the collegiate sports arena.
Embarking on a journey filled with formidable achievements, the LMU Lions carved their name in the annals of NCAA sports. The late 1980s and early 1990s witnessed the men’s basketball team skyrocketing to fame, particularly during the 1989-1990 season. This era was marked not only by their high-octane offense, which led the nation in scoring, but also by their poignant journey to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament, a journey shadowed by the tragic loss of their star player, Hank Gathers. Beyond the hardwood, the Lions have roared with success in various arenas, like the women’s soccer team consistently battling their way into the NCAA tournaments.
Today, the LMU Loyola Marymount Lions continue to uphold their legacy in the competitive realms of the West Coast Conference and NCAA Division I. Their sporting crusade spans across multiple disciplines, including but not limited to basketball, soccer, baseball, and volleyball. What is LMU Loyola Marymount Lions?
The LMU Loyola Marymount Lions represent the athletic prowess of Loyola Marymount University, engaging fiercely in NCAA Division I sports. Their storied presence is most notable in basketball and soccer, among other sports, within the esteemed West Coast Conference.
The lion mascot seems an obvious choice for the Loyola Marymount Lions logo. If you take a look at the previous primary logo, which was adopted in 2001, you’ll see a rather large lion in grey with a red and blue mane.
However, in the 2008 version, there are only the initials of the name of the university. Their shape is the same as on the previous Loyola Marymount Lions logo, while their color has changed to dark red with white and blue trim.
In 2019 the Marymount Lions logo was redesigned and started looking more professional and delightful. The lettering, created in 2008 was rewritten in wider lines with more space between the characters. As for the color palette, it was still composed of blue, red, and white, but their lighter and brighter shades. The outline of the custom letters became thicker and more white was added between the burgundy red body of the characters and their blue outline.
The list of achievements of the men’s basketball team includes five appearances in the NCAA Tournament. They have also competed in the 1986 National Invitation Tournament, the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, and in the 2019 College Basketball Invitational.
The team currently coached by Nathan Choate competed in the College World Series once. The Lions have recorded 9 NCAA appearances and 10 West Coast Conference Championships.
