The teams representing the Jackson State University in NCAA intercollegiate athletics play under the names of the Jackson State Tigers and Lady Tigers.
While the Jackson State Tigers logo used to feature a tiger once, the current version is purely typographic.
What are Jackson State Tigers?
Jackson State Tigers is the name of an athletic program from Jackson State University, which consists of men’s and women’s teams, competing in the first division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in such sports disciplines as Football, Basketball, Soccer, Tennis, and others.
On the 1980 shield, the tiger was stepping down from a large blue “J.”
On the 1994 logo, the tiger was lying over the large letters “JSU.” On the forefront, the text “Jackson State University” was placed.
In 2006, the Jackson State Tigers logo underwent a complete overhaul. It now features the letters “J,” “S,” and “U” each inside a rectangle. A noble soft shade of blue was adopted.
The men’s team has played in five NCAA Division II Tournaments and three NCAA Division I Tournaments. It boasts five appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament and two appearances in the National Invitation Tournaments.
As of 2019, the team has earned 18 conference championships and has won the SWAC title sixteen times. Their head coach is John Hendrick. Their home arena is Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The elegant old-style “JSU” lettering from the Jackson a state Tigers’ primary badge is set in a traditional and bold serif typeface, which is very similar to such fonts as New Century Schoolbook Pro Bold and Alta Mesa Fill Regular.
As for the color palette of the Jackson State Tigers’ visual identity, it is set in navy blue and white, a very elegant combination, which looks timeless and sophisticated, at the same time evoking a sense of extreme confidence, excellence, and professionalism.
