Gryffindor is the name of the Hogwarts School faculty in the Harry Potter series of novels. It is in this faculty that the main positive characters of the work of the famous writer are studied. A distinctive quality of the students of this faculty is courage. A special magic hat was responsible for the distribution of students.

Meaning and history

The distribution of Hogwarts students among the faculties was performed by the famous pointy hat Godric Gryffindor. She analyzed the character of each student and sent him to the faculty where he could reveal himself the most. With some applicants everything was clear at once, with others – it was necessary to think. At the same time, the hat also took into account the wishes of the future student. According to Joan Rowling, each of the four faculties of Hogwarts is associated with a certain element. Gryffindor is fire, Slytherin is water, Hufflepuff is earth and Ravenclaw is air.

Gryffindor is a variant of the French phrase “gryphon d’Or” (golden gryphon). This symbol was often used in medieval heraldry. A gryphon is a mythical creature, a cross between a lion and an eagle. The proud beast on the Gryffindor coat of arms seems to lack a pair of wings.

The Logo

The main symbol on the Gryffindor logo is a lion. The animal is depicted in a profile turning to the right with its mouth open. The image is placed on a dark red background, with a fabric texture, and enclosed into a wide golden frame on a shape of the crest with some curved ornaments.

Another version of the Gryffindor crest looks more traditional from the heraldic point of view. It is a stricter shield in a thin golden frame, with the background divided into four segments — in yellow and burgundy, and the lion rampant drawn over it in gray or gold shades. The lion on this version is facing to the left.

The heraldic logo is usually underlined by an arched ribbon, executed in solid gold and containing an elegant uppercase inscription in a classy serif typeface. The lettering can be set in burgundy or black.

Font and color

The uppercase Gryffindor logotype, written on a smooth ribbon arched under the crest from the center, is written in a medium-weight serif typeface with stable and strong letters and visible, quite massive serifs. The closes font to the one, used on the Gryffindor logo, is probably Weidemann Medium SC or ITC Weidemann Std Medium.

As for the color palette of the Gryffindor crest, it is composed of two main shades — gold and burgundy, where gold may vary from its classic bright shades to darker and more intense ones. The color palette was already explained above: Gryffindor is a faculty with Fire as its element, thus the color combination used for its logo is associated with flame in the first place. Red also stands for courage and passion, while yellow symbolized energy and happiness, and all these qualities you can see in the students of the faculty.
