The Florida Atlantic Owls are the athletic teams representing Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in NCAA Division I sports. FAU, a public university, doesn’t have a singular owner like a private corporation but is operated as a public institution. The Owls are primarily known for their participation in various sports including football, basketball, and baseball. The university is located in Boca Raton, Florida, and its athletic teams operate primarily within this region, participating in the Conference USA. They attract student-athletes and sports enthusiasts from across the nation, contributing significantly to the university’s spirit and community engagement.
The Florida Atlantic Owls were established alongside the founding of Florida Atlantic University in 1961. However, the development of a comprehensive athletics program took several years. Initially, the Owls competed in Division II, gradually making their way to Division I, the top level of NCAA sports. Over the years, the Owls have achieved significant milestones, particularly in sports like baseball, where they have made multiple appearances in the NCAA tournaments. In football, they have secured conference championships, marking their presence in the competitive landscape of college sports. Currently, the Owls maintain a robust position in NCAA Division I sports, known for their competitive spirit and the development of student-athletes who excel both in sports and academics.
What is Florida Atlantic Owls?
They are not just a collection of sports teams but a symbol of athletic and academic excellence within the NCAA Division I framework. Representing Florida Atlantic University, they embody the spirit of competition, student development, and community pride, participating in a wide array of sports at the highest level of college athletics.
The old Florida Atlantic Owls logo, which was adopted in 1994, featured an owl with its wings spread. The creature looked as if it was going to attack. The text “FAU” in red was placed on the forefront.
When the team introduced a new emblem in 2005, it did not get rid of the owl theme. However, the creature looked utterly different now. The Florida Atlantic Owls logo featured only the owl’s face in blue and white. The lettering “FAU” was still there, although it moved from the forefront to a more modest position.
In 2018, the red ribbon carrying ‘Florida Atlantic’ was gotten rid of, and the acronym ‘FAU’ was subsequently lowered onto the bird’s head. The colors also became noticeable darker.
The team has been the Sun Belt Conference co-champions one time. In 2017, they became the Conference USA champions. They also boast three postseason bowl appearances and one appearance in the 2003 I-AA Playoffs.
The history of the university’s baseball team started in 1981. In 2002, the Owls won their only Super Regional. They have won eleven regionals, six Regular Season Conference Championships, and two Conference Tournament Championships.
