Meant to be a free application for gamers, today Discord is an online messenger with more than 300 million audiences, one-third of which have nothing to do with gaming at all. But the most interesting thing is that Discord grew out of a failed video game created by programmer Jason Citron. This is how sometimes one small failure can become a huge success, and the Discord messenger story is direct proof of that. Today Discord is used by gamers and music lovers, students, and crypto-enthusiasts from all over the world.

Who created Discord?
Discord was established in 2015 by two young men, Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy, who were previously engaged in video games development. They wanted to create a platform for gamers, which will have all the necessary functions in one place — from simple chat options to large communities.

Meaning and history

Discord is the name of an online messenger, which was released in 2015 in the United States and today is available in almost thirty languages, having versions for all the existing operating systems. But today it is much more than just a messenger where you can exchange text, voice, and image messages, but a whole community where each user can find an environment according to their interests.

However, not many people know that Discord appeared as a result of its developer’s failure. In 2014, young programmer Jason Citron created “the first full-fledged MOBA for tablets”, Fates Forever. And the most successful element of the game turned out to be the chat. And since the game was not very popular with users, the developer decided to completely change the concept and refocus on communication.

The name, Discord, stands for “disagreement” and “lack of harmony”. And despite its humor, it also points out the main problems of today’s teenagers social problems and difficulties in communication.

At its core, Discord is divided into servers where you can have conversations about games, music, memes, and everyday life. Some servers are open to the public, while others are available by invitation only. Discord allows people to chat using invented names, and control over compliance with community standards is largely left to the organizers of individual servers. It is this approach to user anonymity that has largely contributed to the rapid growth of the messenger’s popularity.

In terms of visual identity, the Discord logo contains all the essential components of a successful design: a bright yet pleasant color palette, a very recognizable symbol, and a progressive and even futuristic logotype, pointing out the purpose of the product and its audience.

What animal is the discord logo?
The animal on the discord logo is a crab-like creature, drawn in a shape of a game controller, hence most often referred to as the Discord Robot. Although, for many, it still looks more like a smiling crab.

2015 – 2021

The original logo of Discord, introduced in 2015, was composed of two parts: an emblem, which was also used as a web icon, and a stylized uppercase wordmark, with elements, which supported and balanced the sharpness of the emblem.

The unique Discord emblem depicts a white image of a stylized game controller, drawn on a solid purple square-shaped dialogue cloud. The white controller has two color blue dots for joysticks, but they also make the drawing look like a smiling face or a funny stylized crab. There is even a resemblance with a superhero mask, so whatever you see on the icon has its right to be there, as Discord is a young application with a rebellious spirit, created for online communities and gamers.

Speaking of the lettering part, executed in a slightly narrowed yet bold and stable geometric sans-serif typeface, it had two main accents — the diagonal cut-outs on the vertical bars of both “D”s. These sharp shortened lines let the air into the heavy inscription and played great together with the upper bent lines of the white creature on the Discord emblem. By the way, today the main symbol of the messenger already has an official name – Clyde.

2021 – Today

With the redesign of 2021 the Discord visual identity kept its uniqueness and recognizability, though got the contours of all the elements refined and made more elegant and timeless. The controller “crab” is now executed in purple and set on a white background, with no dialogue window. But the main changes were made to the lettering. The wordmark from the new emblem is executed in a more traditional wide-lettered font, with the only modification — the letter “I”, with its solid dot placed above the vertical bar and negative space between them being arched, resembling a smile.

Font and color

The Discord logotype, written in all capitals of a customized sans-serif typeface is based on one of such traditional fonts as Uni Sans Heavy or Compose Black, but with both letters “D” modified. Left bars of the Discord “D”s are softened and cut diagonally, making the vertical line pointing to the bottom, and balancing the triangular part of the emblem.

Another interesting thing about the Discord logotype and its unique “D”, is that it looks like one of the letters of the Hebrew Alphabet, “Peh”, which has a double pronunciation in English — whether “P” or “F”.

The light blue and white color palette of the company’s visual identity is a combination, which evokes a sense of calmness and tranquility, where blue stands for trustworthiness, reliability, and safety, and white — for loyalty, purity, and togetherness. Which makes sense, as the application is focused on uniting gamers from all over the world and providing a safe and comfortable space for different communities to chat and share important information in all the possible formats.

The blue and white color scheme is tender and relaxing in f, though looks fresh and crispy, making the brand stand out on the list of its competitors, and elevating its creative logo to the new level.

What color is the Discord logo?
The light and fresh Discord color palette represent creativity, communication, and freedom, which the application provides its users with. The light lilac and blue, used in the visual identity of the brand is Blurple (HEX Color #7289DA), and Full White ( Hex Color #FFFFF).

Icon

The graphical part of the Discord logo, its icon, has been with the application since the very beginning, though with the redesign of 2021 the recognizable remote symbol became bolder and stronger.

This Icon symbolizes the purpose of Discord and brings life and vitality to the inanimate object, a gaming device. The remote control with two plain white circles, resembling two eyes, starts looking like a crab, a creative, which symbolizes protection (important for the Internet life today), emotions (gaming does give a lot), and an endless life cycle.

As for the chosen color, the icon is executed in the same palette as the logotype of Discord, smooth yet lively purple on white. And this color combination also adds such qualities as ambition, peace, trustworthiness, and independence, to the characteristics of the brand. Modern and powerful, like the overall Discord idea and its execution.
