DePaul Blue Demons represent DePaul University in NCAA Division I college sports. The entity isn’t owned in the traditional business sense, as it’s an integral part of DePaul University, a private Catholic university in Chicago, Illinois. Central to their operations is their participation in the Big East Conference, predominantly in the Midwest and the East Coast of the United States. Their athletic prowess is showcased across various sports, including basketball, soccer, and track and field, among others.
The DePaul Blue Demons were not so much founded as they organically emerged, coinciding with the establishment of DePaul University in 1898. The name “Blue Demons” was adopted in 1900, replacing the former moniker “D-Men,” a nod to the university’s name. Over the years, the Blue Demons have achieved notable successes, particularly in men’s basketball, where they have made numerous NCAA Tournament appearances and have been regular contenders in conference championships. A crowning achievement was their Final Four appearance in the 1979 NCAA Tournament. As of now, the DePaul Blue Demons continue to be a significant presence in collegiate sports, maintaining a competitive spirit and striving for excellence in the Big East Conference.
What is DePaul Blue Demons?
It’s not a company, but a name synonymous with the athletic teams of DePaul University, competing with distinction in various NCAA Division I sports. Their legacy is interwoven with the history and spirit of DePaul University, reflecting both athletic prowess and academic excellence.
The old DePaul Blue Demons logo adopted in 1978 featured a large blue “D” on the white background. There was hardly anything unique about it – just a regular block capital letter.
Only a year later, though, the team unveiled an emblem sporting a side view of a stylized blue demon with a long thin tail and a beard.
In this form, DePaul Blue Demons logo existed until 1999 when it was redrawn from scratch. This time, the devil looked completely different. You could see a side view of his face over a blue shield.
It’s the same shield emblem, but with a darker color palette.
The basis of the next design is the same horned shield of dark blue. Except, its contents now amount to just the demon’s head drawn in full face, which occupies much of the center. It’s blue with a sizeable black shadow on the left and bright red eyes.
The university’s men’s basketball team has competed in two Final Fours in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. They have won one National Invitation Tournament championship. The women’s basketball team made their 20th appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2015. They have made it to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen four times.
DePaul University sponsors a softball program. Over the last two decades, the women’s team has competed in the Women’s College World Series four times. In 2007, it was ranked sixth in the final USA Today/NFCA Poll.
