Chloé is a luxury and exquisite fashion label, which was founded in 1952 in Paris, by Gaby Aghion, an aristocrat with Egyptian roots, who relocated to France in 1945. Mademoiselle Aghion was not only the founder of the label, but also its head designer until 1985. Today the chic label, which produces women’s clothing, footwear, accessories, and even perfume, is owned by the Swiss-based Richemont Group, whose portfolio also includes such fancy names as Alaïa, Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Montblanc, and others.
Gaby Aghion named her brand after her friend with whom she sewed her outfits, Chloe de Brumeton. The company’s founder didn’t like her name, saying it was more suited for a fortune teller rather than a designer.
When creating her first collection, Gaby was inspired by Christian Dior. Her dresses were quickly bought up by famous and influential Parisians, which prompted the young designer to open his own atelier. Already in 1956, the legendary Cafe de Flore hosted the first show of the Chloé fashion collection. The images were light and airy, and the brand managed to carry this lightness through the years. Today, Chloé outfits are still instantly recognizable due to the airiness of the fabrics and silhouettes.
Soon Gaby invited the young and unknown Karl Lagerfeld, who remained in the position for almost two decades, to become head designer. Later, the brand was run by women including Martin Sitbon, Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo, and Clare Waight Keller. All of them became star designers.
Today, the company’s products include women’s and children’s clothing, accessories, bags, home goods and exquisite perfumes. As before, the masters adhere to all the traditions of the brand, creating feminine, delicate, refined products that show a unique style with notes of restraint. Chloé is a luxury.
The Chloé visual identity is text-based but looks complete and remarkable. The wordmark, executed in a classic vintage-style typeface with curved lines and diagonal cuts on the letters’ peaks, is a reflection of romantic character and tenderness. The Chloé logo is sleek and modern, yet creates a retro feel, showing the brand’s history and heritage. It is a timeless classic.
The iconic Chloé logo hasn’t changed much since the beginning of the brand’s history. It was always based on classy lettering, written in the title case of a beautiful serif typeface. However, throughout the years the letters became a bit more elegant and slim, reflecting the ability of the brand to assimilate to new trends and to set its own. The main eye-catching elements of the logo is a fancy accrue accent above the “E”, which balances the lettering, adding height to the last character, making it equal to the capital “C” in the beginning, the “L” and a vertical bar of the “H” in the middle, and hence, creating a symmetry.
The sleek title case lettering from the primary logion of the Chloé fashion brand is set in a traditional serif typeface with confident and distinctive bars decorated by sophisticated triangular serifs. The closest commercial font to the one, used in this insignia, is probably Juana, but with some significant modifications.
The brand uses two colors in its visual identity, which are always alternated in the logo — light beige or black, both are used on a white background. Light beige in combination with white is a pure and fresh combination, which evokes a peaceful and delicate feeling. It is very feminine and sophisticated. The monochrome version of the Chloe logo is stronger and more confident, yet not less elegant. It is a representation of finesse and luxury. The bold lines of the wordmark look more distinct and stylish.
