Camel is a famous tobacco brand, established in 1913 in the USA. The label is managed by Reynold Tobacco in America and Japan Tobacco is Asia. Camel cigarettes are distributed worldwide.

Meaning and history

The Camel brand managed to make not only tobacco history, but also advertising history. It is all the fault of that first company, which was launched by agents. A few days before the product went on sale, an image of camels appeared in all American newspapers. The animals were furnished with the understandable slogan “Camels.” People were at a loss as to what this was all about. The next day, the ad was bigger, saying, “Camels are coming”. On the third day, the advertisement stirred even more: “Tomorrow there will be more camels here than in Africa and Asia combined”. The population braced itself for something quite extraordinary. On the day of the sale, the newspapers came out with the statement, “The camels are already here”. Such an unusual and fresh publicity stunt gave the brand a loyal following from the start of sales. The brand became recognizable, and sales became solid immediately.

In 1913, the company’s famous logo, Old Joe,also appeared on the packaging. The camel on the cigarette pack actually represents the American traveling circus Barnum & Beily. In time, the portrait of the famous camel will appear on all packs of cigarettes produced by the company.

What is Camel?
Camel is the name of one of the world’s most famous brands of cigarettes, which was established by Richard Joshua Reynolds in 1913. For the first cigarettes the following mixture of tobaccos was used: mild Virginia varieties were mixed with tart dark Turkish tobacco. Over time, it would become known worldwide as the American Blend, a kind of benchmark.

1913 – Today


It’s the classic Camel emblem in use even now, while other emblems are also based on it. It shows a black camel with a bit more detail than other emblems have. Above it, there is the brand’s name. It’s an arched word that uses white letters with black contours. The font is an old-fashioned serif print.
There’s also a ‘Genuine Taste’ bit written in italic below the main emblem.

Before 2019


This later design uses instead a blue oval as a base for the emblem. The camel now has a natural yellow color. The wordmark above uses a similar design, except with smoother serifs and a pure white color.

2019 – Today

The iconic Camel logo was designed in 1913 and o my slightly modified during the brand’s history. Consisting of an emblem and a wordmark above it, it is one of the most recognizable logos in the world.

The Camel all-caps wordmark is arched and executed in a custom typeface, which is a Coffin Nails, created on the basis of hand lettering of the original logo from 1913.

The unique curves of letters “L” and “A” make the logo remarkable and elegant. Executed both in black or in light gray with a black outline, the bold lettering of the Camel inscription looks confident and powerful.

The Camel emblem is the silhouette of a dromedary, which is a camel with one hump. The animal is looking left and is usually executed in black for typography and orange for the packaging.

The gray, yellow and orange color palette of the Camel packaging is friendly and light, evoking a sense of calmness and comfort.

The Camel logo is timeless and unique, it is instantly recognizable in every corner of the world and there is no need to change anything.

Font and Color

The stylized uppercase lettering from the primary Camel badge is set in a custom sans-serif typeface with stable capital characters written in thick lines, with straight cuts and sleek arched silhouettes. The are no commercial typefaces similar to the one, used in this insignia, but there is something close to such fonts as Fondue Ultra Bold, or Wedding Gothic ATF Heavy, but only in some letters.

As for the color palette of the Camel visual identity, it represent the mascot animal of the brand, and the desert — in yellow and beige shades the badge look recognizable and unique.
