The Yale Bulldogs logo has featured a bulldog of some kind since at least 1930. The way it looks has been subject to numerous changes.

Meaning and history

Yale Bulldogs is the name of an athletic program fromYale University, a private educational institution, which was established in Connecticut in 1701, and is one of the Ivy League colleges.

The Bulldogs program is composed of 35 men’s and women’s teams, which compete in the first division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in such sports disciplines as Baseball, Basketball, Crew, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Fencing, Sailing, Tennis, and many more.

Yale Bulldogs is one of the strongest NCAA members, which won two national championships in different disciplines.

1901 – 1972

The original Yale Bulldogs logo, used by the athletic program from the beginning of the 20th century until 1972, looked pretty much the same as the current badge of the sports clubs fromYale University — a solid blue capital “Y” in a geometric serif font. The letter featured straight lines, clean contours, andno graphical or text additions.

1930 – 1942

The logo, used by the Yale Bulldogs club in the 1930s — 1940s was a portrait of a bulldog executed in blue lines and placed on a white background. The dog was wearing a leather football helmet and had its head slightly inclined to the right. The club’s mascot looked like it was watching the ball and was ready to step in and fight any second.

1960 – 1972

The emblem used in 1960-1971 showcased the bulldog standing on the four paws and facing to the left. On the 1930-1942 logo, there was only the head to be seen.

1972 – 1995

On the previous logo (1972-1995), the dog was depicted in full height. The creature was leaning over the “Y.” You could clearly see the word “Yale” on the chest.

1995 – 1997

The redesign of 1995 has introduced something new — a roundel in two shades of blue and white. It was a circle with a white image of a bulldog, drawn in profile facing to the right, and decorated with several white horizontal lines, coming out of it to the left, and creating a sense of speed and motion. The framing of the medallion boasted a white lightweight “Yale Bulldogs” inscription in the uppercase of an extended modern sans-serif font.

1997 – 2019

On the current emblem, you can see the side view of a highly stylized head of the bulldog. In the background, there is a large slab serif “Y.”
