Vinted, a thriving online marketplace, specializes in second-hand fashion, promoting sustainable clothing choices. It’s a hub where users buy, sell, or swap apparel, accentuating eco-friendly fashion. Operating mainly in Europe and the U.S., it’s a leader in numerous European markets. The company, co-founded by Milda Mitkute and Justas Janauskas, is now owned by a group of investors, including Lightspeed Venture Partners and Insight Venture Partners. Vinted stands as a testament to the growing trend of conscious consumerism in the fashion industry.

Meaning and history

Vinted, established in Lithuania in 2008 by Milda Mitkute and Justas Janauskas, started as a solution to Mitkute’s overflowing wardrobe. Initially a local website, it soon expanded, becoming an international platform. In 2010, it launched in Germany, its first venture outside Lithuania, followed by the U.S. in 2015. Vinted’s model pivoted over time, from a classifieds platform to a peer-to-peer marketplace, emphasizing sustainability in fashion.

The company’s growth trajectory saw pivotal moments, particularly in funding and ownership. In 2016, it faced financial challenges, leading to a crucial restructuring and a focus on European markets. This shift proved successful, with Vinted securing significant funding from investors like Sprints Capital, Insight Venture Partners, and Burda Principal Investments.

In 2019, a major funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Sprints Capital boosted Vinted’s valuation to over $1 billion, earning it ‘unicorn’ status. This investment was pivotal, fueling further expansion and consolidating its position in the European market. The company also acquired its Dutch competitor, United Wardrobe, in 2020, further expanding its footprint.

Vinted continues to operate as a leader in the online second-hand fashion marketplace. With a user base of millions, it maintains a strong presence in Europe and the U.S. The platform’s success is attributed to its user-friendly interface, no-fee model for sellers, and commitment to sustainable fashion. Vinted’s journey from a local website to a global marketplace reflects the increasing consumer interest in eco-friendly and affordable fashion options, making it a key player in the evolving landscape of the fashion industry.
